Hello every body.
I own a honda 400CBX for some years now. The engine is really ok and reaches easily the red zone but riding is very uncomfortable due to the rear absorber.
Does anyone know if it can be repaired or what is the best solution for a replacement.
furthermore, I am very interested in any technical information/description of this bike...

I have tons of digital, pictures I took before I started to strip my CBX550. Do you want copies?
Whilst on, do you know the best way of cleaning the alloy swing arm?

I just bought an 83 550 with a spare engine. Neither engine works, they both failed at the #3 big end bearing. After tearing them apart, it seems the oil port on that journal was drilled out smaller than all the rest. I'm guessing it was an isolated manufacturing defect, someone replaced a drill bit in the NC mill and put in the wrong size for a short run, maybe just a fraction of the 83's are affected. Just my guess.
Has anyone had success fixing this problem? I've just renewed one of the crankshafts, but what I should do is bore out that port to a consistent size. Has anyone tried anything like this?
I'd love to talk to anyone with experience on this.

Hi, Bog
The cam chain tensioner is separated by 2 parts mainly, as you mentioned. I understand that you will change both with the guide and the slipper.
According to my Honda manual (in Japanese), if you remove cam chain tensioner then you have to off the cam shafts. But cylinder head is after cam chain tensioner.
Exactly, the process in manual is;
1. unscrew 12 cylinder head mount bolts
2. pick lower cam chain tensioner assy up to remove
3. pull the cylinder head to out
4. remove the cam chain guide and slipper.
I don't know you can remove guide and slipper before cylinder head off. I only guess you can do it because I cannot find any lock bolt or hook to fix the guide and the slipper.
Just for your info.
Yasu.

Hello Yasu,
I will change my cam chain and the tensioner, because it'is very noisy now. Should I change the upper guide and the long side guide ?
Is the upper one just a protection ? but the long one ?
Because to change the tensioner I just should to dismount the admission cam shaft. And if I want to change the long guide I should to dismount the cylinder head and change the cylinder head gastet, and the cost and worked time will increase.
I want to do it to a honda retailer ( because I don't have the tools and the experience and I want to go in holiday in 2 weeks with my cbx) but I suppose they will fuck me ( You should to change all ... and buy a 600 hornet... or buy a VFR...)
Thanx ,
Regards,
Bog

I have a beautiful red, white and blue 1985 CBX550 F2 which unfortunately I am going to have to sell.
I bought it from the original owner 3 years ago, it has been garaged every day and has less than 7000 miles from new!
I have put on 2 new tyres and an exhaust - I don't think you will find a nicer example.
Drop me an e-mail if you are interested.

Hi,
I bougth the Haynes technical handbook. I ordered it on www.haynes.com. It is the only one book producer I know for for CBX550...

I need an owner guide or a technical revue (in french or in english) for repairing and servicing my CBX 400 FII. It was just 33000 kilometers since new, and it works nearly perfect but looks just correct. It needs some cosmetic attentions. :o)

Hello,
I dismouted my anti-dive system saturday .An old user worked like a pig: the spring between the screw and the ball was cutted (easy to see). To dismount the screw, I had to drill the head because the head was used.
As I had a 400 CBX fork, I took its parts ( I saw before if the parts were the sames).
I took the 400CBX small spring, screw and housing. ( I conserved the 550CBX seal, spring (the big one) )
In fact, I suppose that the anti dive systems has been working all the time (I think that this is why the fork was too hard and I found that the anti dive didn't work (even if I changed the 1-2-3-4 position.)
I tried all 4 positions and now I see the differences. In position 1, when I brake it's very soft, and in position 4, it's harder but I find that the system is not very effective ( As Yasu wrote). It' s not an anti-dive system but a soft controled-dive system.
Regards,
Bog

I just bought a cbx and have done a lot of work on the bike. The only thing is the cam chain tension problem. Can someone give me a little clairification as to how to do the fix described here. And what components have to be removed. Is it on the back of the cylinder block or the front?

Hello Yasu,
I've got pictures of my CBX (but on paper), I need to scan them and i will send them you.
>Yes, wobble problem is common of us. CBX steering head
>is sensitive. Dave Head is right.
One day, if I'm courageous I will try with other bearings.
>And about the anti dive system, it has adjustable dial.
>Please try to set it to another position. I think this
>anti dive system itself is not smart and effective but
>anyway it do resist to dive.
I tried all the positions and it doesn't work. I will dismount the system when I will have time.
When I dismounted for the first time my fork (It was the last time too), I changed all the seals, but I hadn't dismount the screw which blocks the spring and the small ball in the anti dive system because the screw head is used.
Is it possible that the ball is locked?
It will dismount it and I will say you if it works .
>Even after you changed the fork oil, your anti-dive
>system never work, you have to disassemble it probably.
Thanx for your CBX site.
Bonjour de France
Bog.

Hello,
Thanx for people who answered me.
Now, I ride my 550 CBX and it's great.
I remove my old rear tyre and the wooble effect is between 55 and 65 km/h and before it was around 120 km/h.
My head bearings are new.
I changed my fork oil (-> 5W) (what is ATF oil??, I saw it in the Haynes manual ) and the fork works better.
But I find that it is not very good. (I ride the 650NTV of my girlfriend sometimes and if my motor is better, the NTV frame is better)
I find that the CBX brakes are not very good.
I should to change the cam chain tensioner because it is noisy (a little bit).
For people who use spacers in the fork. Did you try different length or just 20mm ?
I've got cbx400 fork spacers (the same as 550, between the two springs is the fork )and I will mount them.
I find that the anti-dive system doesn't work. I changed the seals. Is the anti dive system really avoid the fork to be compressed when I brake?
Regards, Bog

I own a 1984 CBR400F which was only sold in the japanese market. Since i live in india i am facing a big problem trying to source parts for the motor. A limited number of these bikes were sold..i guess around 50000 in japan only...the motor looks the same as the CBX400 motor except the head, i was wondering if i could replace my existing crankshaft, main bearings & con rod bottom end bearings with those from a CBX motor? My crankshaft is currently giving problems...hence the replacement. Can anyone give me the address of someone selling new/second hand CBX parts???
Any help will be heaven sent.

Your handling problem sounds more like your head bearings than your fork pressure . I had exactly the same wobble on my cbx untill I swapped them for taper roller bearings. It's now rock steady up to 115 mph !. Incidentally I run my forks at max. pressure as well as 20mm spacers on top of the springs.
regards Dave
