Thanks for the imput out there ...... honda part no. is
SSH750 but my local bearing store can't cross it to a BCA,Timken,or SKF bearing no.there must be a common Taper Roller Bearing that replaces these two .
hehe.......i'll get to the bottom of it.
Stay tuned for more of the adventures of IN SEARCH OF STEARING HEAD BEARINGS. thanks Gang

Hi John.......I went thruogh the same problem when i bought my bike @ 35,000k " Rattle Noise ". Tensioner biggest Problem ( Design Type i mean.......It;s designed like an Ironing Board )the tensioner pivots. on a shaft-----after a while that shaft gets a worn spot in it ,as well as the " bracket " it slides through.
I cleaned up the shaft and the hole it slides through and replaced the chain with a factory one.
It was a closed loop chain ......so i borrowed a chain splitter ( with a $100 deposite from the bike shop ). Split both chains , then tied old chain to new chain with a piece of wire and turned engine over by hand so as to feed new chain in while extracting old chain.I rejoined chain with the spitting tool i borrowed.* Note * make shure u follow manual as not to mess up cam and sproket timing.
when your done ....slowly .....very slowly.....turn the engine over by hand as to make shure nothing BINDS!!!!!

The taper bearing set for the cbx is common to all the "smaller" Honda's. cb 250, cb 400 4 etc. Any local motorcycle shop should stock them.

Unfortunately I don't know the part number for it but some Japanese folkes already did it. Just report if you succeed it for sharing useful info.

Grazie anticipatamente,
PS.Mi trovo in Thailandia.
Saluti

Simon,
If i were you, i would open up the entire rear wheel assembly and service the brake linkage with the swingarm, most probs thats where the problem should lie.
Cheers

Have just acquired CBX550F 1984 model.

Bike looks and runs fine but makes weird clicking noises from somewhere inside the inboard rear disk set up when the rear wheel rotates that dissapears when the brake is applied.

I have no experience of these disks before and the haynes manual isnt to helpfull. Anyone experienced anything similar or have any ideas where to start??

hello,
I saw last month that my 550 cbx was a 400 cbx: in fact, i've got a 550 cbx frame with a 400 cbx motor.
This is why the lenght of the cam chain wasn't good as i wrote last time.
When I bought the cbx I just look on the frame number. The motor number was dirty and I didn't know that NC07 was a 400 number.
I saw this mistake when i dismounted the clutch to change the disks last month. Even the honda retailer didn't saw it when I give my cbx to repair the cam chain tensioner ( just a gang of suckers).
Now I want to buy a 400 cbx frame with good papers (cheap if the motor is broken) and mount all my 550 parts on the 400.
Is it exist diferences on the frame beetween the 400 and the 550 ? I know the fork just has 1 brake disk on the 400 but the tubes are the sames. And the old owner mounted a 400 motor on my 550 frame, I suppose all the other parts are the sames ? no ?
Can someone confirm it to me ?

I find that a 400 cbx motor is well working ( 11000 rpm without a problem). The 550 should be great :(

thanx
bog

The bike is ready and running like a dream. For all the DIY enthusiasts...The oil hole on the No.3 con-rod journal was increased by 0.2mm. Head gasket can be fabricated out of 1mm thick copper plate (will hold all the way thru the rev range coz i have already tried it out) and the base gasket out of 6mm sheet. High temp silicone sealant does great to replace stock gaskets for the clutch/alternator...covers.
Cheers and more later after long term rape of the bike to see how my in-house fabrication works.

Hi all,
Opened up the 400's engine yesterday, never knew it would be so easy! The crank had developed a flat spot on the no.3 cylinder journal. All the other journals measure 30mm in dia whereas the no.3 cyl journal measured 29mm and 28.3mm. Have given the crank for metallizing and nitriting. As i am going to be making the gaskets myself i want to know what thickness gasket to use for the cylinder base gasket. Will let u guys know when i finally get to start the bike.
cheers

Hello Yasu and all the cbx owners,

I've got my CBX since the last saturday, the cam chain and the cam chain tensionner have been changed (very expensive, because of lot of problems). Now, the motor is ok but it sounds a bit noisy at low RPM (< 2000 RPM) ( racklerackle...)
The mechanic said me it's ok.

The last 'son of a bitch' owner mounted the cam chain with 64 chain links, and the correct length is 65 chain links. The tensionner didn't work correctly (didn't work at all, 'cause the chain was too tightned and the break risk was high).
Now the battey is low :(( and the clutch doesn't work correctly : I can't start while pushing because the clutch slips. It slips too in high RPM.
It's easy to change the cluch disks.

Pictures will coming soon.

Have just completed dismantling my 400's engine. No.3 cyl had 4mm of play at the crank journal. After closer inspection i discovered a flat spot on the crank journal and a strange fact...the oil hole on this journal is smaller than the rest!!?? I am getting the crank journal built up and metallized, what i wanna know is :is it advisable to increase the dia of the oil pass?
Cheers

singh,
The rattling you are refering to is most likly your cam chain, these bikes have nitorious problems with them, you'll most likely need to replace it as well as the tensioner. Does anybody know of a good aftermarket 4-1 exhaust that has a web page in english?
ps. I have to brag, i just picked up two sets of side covers for my bike for about $12 US ($20 CAN) as well asa fuel tank, and new seat for $10!!

Brian this is regarding the NC17 model you have. As far as i know the CBR400F which had the same engine as the CBX400F has the NC17 code. I have the NC17 Honda, it comes with the REV head, the only diff between the CBR and the CBX is the chassis/bodywork and the Valve control mechanism. This bike came in quite a few models. The Fe and Ff model came without the fairing. The F2 and F3(endurance) models have the fairing. BTW check on the rim of the wheels to confirm which year your bike was manufactured.
cheers

Hi all,

Have a CBX400F2 (Jap Import) that's been standing for a while (under cover) and it's all fine except for a short duration rattle from the engine when the throttle is closed.

Motor sounds fine otherwise and ticks over perfectly with no knocks or rattles at all.

Noise present in all gears and currently suspect cam tensioner is stuck.

Anyone confirm this?

Cheers,

Jools

Hi My name is Denis
Ihave a CBX550F in need of repair.
Most of the work I am doing myself.
But I need a starter motor.
Is there anyone out there who will sell me one
I live in Brisbane Australia. I would prefer one in Australia. If possible.
My Bike came without one. I start it by pushing it along a bush track. It seems to have poor acceleration at low revs.
I am repairing it for registation on the roads.
Eventually I want to take it from Cairns to the top of Cape york. I hope not to be crocodile bait by sleeping out in the open. So I won't sleep next to a creek or river.
Anyone want to come? maybe next year.
I would like to do this in winter as the temperature up there is around 38 Deg C. The winter is usually 25 Deg C.
This makes it much easier to travel.
Regards
Denis.

Hi Denis,
My name is Shayne and I recently purchased a CBX550F and spent a lot of money getting it up to roadworthy condition.
Unfortunately, number1 cylinder seized and damaged the upper crank case. However, the rest of the bike is in very good condition - new back tyre, fork seals, chain, rear sprocket, battery, to name a few. The monoshock has been rebuilt and the rest of the components are in working order.
I am looking to sell the bike (still assembled) and if you are interested, or maybe know someone who could be, please contact me on this address: sharon6410@hotmail.com
Thankyou.

Dear Xavier,
I also owned 400F, sometime I had to overhaul the linkage of rear swingarm pivot. It includes 4 or more small tube parts. Even 3000Km running after, the grease arround this tubes will be used up easy.
Please check it out.
Some web readers also report sometime the rear shock unit itself need overhaul.
Yasu.
