I am in the process of reconditioning a CBX 550 F2D. I have taken apart the pro-link suspension to check the bushes and pins and found them all worn with lots of play in them.

I contacted David Silvers and established that some of the bushes and pins are a discontinued line. Does anyone know where in the East London area or Essex where I can get them made up or where I might be able to locate some?

Thanks.

Jim

Hello writer from Wed Jul 14 07:08:13 2004.

Thank you for your advice regarding the use of synthetic oil. I have earlier used synthetic MC-oil on my 550 F2. For the moment, I use a good quality mineral MC-oil. My experience is that when I use synthetic oil, I get much mechanical noise, probably from the cam chain inside the motor. When using mineral oil in the engine, the noise disappear.
Due to the noise problematic I still use mineral oil, and change it every 3000 km.
Anybody else that have experience or advice regarding synthetic or mineral oil?

Best regards Ulf G.

Hi Paul, I'd see if you could get a compression test done if it's oily ( and not just dry carbon deposits )
Could be worn piston bore /rings, a worn valve stem oil seal, a worn valve guide, worn valve stem, or even a cracked head/block! ( unlikely though )

If it's just carbon fouling on the sparkplug... you could first check your plug cap and lead to make sure it's not broken inside ( and of course dont rule out a faulty sparkplug itself! )

if the lead seems fine, and the plug is fine, ( you could try them in a different cylinder to see if the carbon fouling/deposits follw it, or remain on the no.3 cylinder )..
Check your coils are ok.. ( you could swap the two over.. trying left coil on right side, and right coil on left side... then see if the fouling has followed the swap over. )

Without a known good spare part to substitute for the suspect one. it's pretty difficult with a limited knowledge and tool box !

good luck.

I should have said... start at the sparkplug... and work BACKWARDS along the line to find the fault. if you get as far as the CDI/Spark unit.. ( after having tried swapping leads etc.. ) then it's probably that... or a broken pickup coil in the starter chain housing, but thats pretty unlikely too )

Ulf! You can use syntetic oil 15-40, that will work very well with the engine. The idle ratio will raise a little and you will notice a quicker response in the engine.

A mineral oil will not perform or last as long as a fully syntetic oil.

Biltema in Norway have a syntetic motorcycleoil for a good price that is perfect. Many motorcyclists in Sweden are using that oil and it is a very good oil for a good price!

my CBX 400 won't run fluently anymore at low rev's (up to 5000) once the engine block has heated up. There's a rather harsh sound at this low revs, unlike few weeks before.
Carb's have been checked few months ago, air filter is ok.
Spark plugs are not very old either.
What's going on ? Anybody a suggestion ?

I bought a CBX550F in 1994, just to hava a bike to ride until I could afford something better...
A year ago I sold it and bought a...CBX550F2, a former road racing motorcycle!

I'm in love with this old Honda-model! It's performance and techniqual standard still goes!

I still manage to keep ahead of most modern 600cc-bikes and sometimes even bigger machines as long as there is curves on the road.

If you are aware of the wobbly fork and the soft rear suspension you wo'nt go wrong...

Nowadays it's hard to find a good set of tyres to the bike.
I use 100/80-18 in front and 120/80-18 in rear. Bridgestone BT 045.

Looking for help with problem.
Symptoms -
Runs well above 3000 rpm
Idling and running below that speed erratic, sometimes OK, sometimes spluttering, misfiring, refusing to pick-up and then it suddenly goes - a real handfull in traffic!!

Remedies attempted to no avail -
New plugs
New H.T. leads
Visual check of crank ignition pick - up sensor
Much WD40!
New battery
Carbs removed, jets blown through, diaphragms checked, slides checked for free movement - but settings (balance and mixture left alone because it runs ok some times)
Petrol tap and fuel filter checked.
Air cleaner visually checked and blown through.

I'm in despair!
It's such a lovely bike to ride when running OK.
Any ideas on what else I can do?
Could it be an intermitant air leak on the induction?
Sometimes applying the choke seems to help.
Is the inlet manifold / carburettor stubs prone to cracking?
I would welcome any fresh ideas.

well gentleman, it seems as though by a bit of fluke I managed to manually tighten a noisey camchain on my old girl. She's got 41k on the clock and there was a couple small oil leaks at the front of the valve cover. I pulled it off to replace the gasket and reseal. While I was in there I wanted to see if I could get a closer look at the tentioner from the top. Remove the two oil lines on either side of the cam chain. Remove top cam chain guide. Now there are 4 9/16 bolts holding the tensioner tower. Remove the nuts then manually pull up on the tower. I was trying to see if I could just raise it far enough to get a better look down there but inadvertantly tightend the tensioner in doing so. Don't pull up on the tower bracket too hard as too much tension on the chain is not a good thing. If it's too tight theres a chance the worn cam chain could break when everything heats up and expands. I realize this is just a band aid fix for a worn chain but my bikes never purred so beautifully. Been riding for about 4 days since and not a bit of slack has come back. If this helps anyone get a few more k's out of their chain it may be worth it. Oh yeah, got those oil leaks fixed too!!

Dave.

Hallo Roland and thank you for your information. I sendt a mail to the German club about 6 weeks ago with a question regarding buying the repair manual and parts manual that they have on CD-rom. However I never got any answer on my mail. Maybe the reason that I did not have any answer was that I did write the mail in English and not in German.

Have anyone ordered the CD-Rom from them. Or is it only for members of the German CBX 550 club.

Best reg. Ulf G

Some letters seems impossible to use in this board. Hopefully I will learn them. I will try one more time.

Hello Basmaf

Thank you for your advice regarding semi synthetic oil. As I mentioned, the earlier owner of my bike used synthetic oil (an expensive Castrol).
I am little worried to use synthetic, because I also have been told that synthetic oil is no good on older engines. However in some discussion groups on the internet as the Classic Honda Club Sweden (for owners of Honda Bikes from 1969-78) has there been several advices to use synthetic oil for their old Hondas. And of course this make me a little confused.

That is way I asked for other owners to give some advices regarding their experience. So please, CBX 550 owners: Write some lines in the message board, as I believe it is not only me, that wondering about the synthetic or mineral oil. Or as Basmaf advice 穆emi synthetic.

Thanks for the info about the microfiche. Send me a mail or let me know if you still have them when your bike is sold. The Honda owner manual I already have. Both the Haynes and the original Honda (one for the 400/550 F + the additional appendix for the F2)

Best regards Ulf G

Hi Ulf
I use semi synthetic, badged by Vauxhall, as standard mineral, which is dam expensive here, and was originally used, is not quite up to the job, imho.
Fully synthetic can damage older engines, so I am told, as it can cause glazing on the bores.
As for the microfiche, there are 2 in the set, 1983 CBX550 FD. They are dated Feb 03. Part number 13MC7A21
They are for the Canadian import model, but the part numbers do work, as I have used them in the past.
I also have the Honda owners manual (1982).
Both are advertised with the bike.
If the new owner declines them, I will let you know.
Cheers

sorry, but I dont really understand the question, but it sounds like you had to replace the starter clutch chain.
Yes?
If so, there are 2 pulse generators under the outer casing.
1 at the lower right, and the other at the upper left.
They are opposite each other
There is no adjustment, they just bolt to the inner casing.
You should be able to tell which goes where, from the cable length.
Note: the wiring runs behind the chain guide.
I cant scan the picture to show you as my scanner is broken, sorry, but I may just be able to find a picture.
Let me look.
