Not irritated Ulf, i think you summed up the problem about the board. the style of the board is rather outdated and the lack of a search is really missed.

but we still love it.....

as for the parts manual, i cant think where you may get one.
anyone else know?

Hello CBX owners.

Sorry for the strange text in my last message. Here is it hopefully correct.

I can understand that Basmaf, Rob, Richard + other regular users of the message board get irritated of the same questions all the time. However this message board is difficult for new users, because it is not any easy way off find earlier discussed items. You have to do it the hard way = read all the old messages (more than 1000 items). I did it yesterday and I used almost the whole day.

I am a new user, and I found a lot of useful knowledge in there. Thank you all, you old regular users.
This message board is a fantastic knowledge bank for a new user / owner, if he / she take the time to read all old messages.

Guess what the next question will be.....:
Does anyone knows were to get a Honda parts manual? A paper copy, CD or on microfiche.

Best regards from Ulf Gusgard, a Norwegian CBX 550 F2 owner.

A question for all you CBX'ers.
Does your oil pressure light come on when you are braking hard even with oil up to the correct level?

Track day # 1 report.
Had to replace the main bearings of the crank again after discovered shiny bits of metal in the oil after the first track day this year. I now believe that the crank bearing failures are due to oil starvation when braking hard. (typically con rod #3) The oil pick-up is located at the rear of the engine and all the oil sloshes away from the oil pick-up during hard braking. (I have four engines with blown cranks). I have made a baffle for the oil pan and now use synthetic race oil. After one race day it seems to be holding together.

Next track day June 21

Keep you posted.

Hi Mark
Not decided on the new bike yet, but looking like a Bandit.
I will be sticking around, so don稚 worry.
Hate to see the CBX going, as I have finally got about everything right, and she is running sweet.
No cam chain rattle, no smoke from the pipe. Great fun
I have had to spend lots of cash on her, and there is no way I can recoup that, but it has been a blast.
Almost had the pegs down other weekend, and left my escort well behind on the twisties.
Who says a 20-year old bike can稚 cut it with modern ironmongery.
I do love the beast, but it is time for a change.
She is too old to p-ex, but I am hoping somebody will buy her; after all, everything has already been done to make her right.
Thanks for your advice over they year痴 chaps.
I will probably need to offload some bit as well.
I will give you lot first shout.
Thanks
-Basmaf

First things first....

Richard. i have to agree with you on the point about reading past messages. its one of the main reasons i aint posted for a while. getting a bit fed up with seeing the same questions asked.
As for the valve adjust problem, mps or m and p, cant rememer which, and i cant be bothered to look!! do a cheap and nasty gadget that will do the trick. trouble is they charge about twenty quid for it. so its expensive and nasty....let me know if you cant find it, and i will get you a link.

Sorry that the bike is going Basmaf. whats the new bike?
i will miss your long..long..long..l..o..n..g. posts...
only joking mate! as i have said in the past to others, keep dropping in to let us know how you are doing and answer the odd question.
I also see that Gary may be leaving us, what will you be doing after cbx??

Hi All,
I think any new posters really ought to read previous posts before asking some questions, as most of the answers are there already..... Hmmmm?

Hving SAID that...... I've taken my own advise... but not found the answer..... so here goes..

"what are you meant to use to adjust the tappets with? ( apart from the feeler blades for measuring... ) My tappets have a small square protrusion on top of each one? Is there a special tool for the job? or should i just fiddle about with a pair of pliers?"

Thanks in advance....

Richard. :o)

Here's some answers for others.. ( to the best of my knowledge )

A: Panels...... and just about ANYTHING else...

check out David Silvers website http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/

B: Some GREAT offers / sales on ebay.co.uk at the moment regarding CBX550F and F2's... whole bikes, rolling frames, engine parts etc.. there's lots there all at great prices.

Hi,

I just bought a 1982 550 FII. It goes really well but has a rattling noise. Is this the famous cam chain? I have had it checked but no one seems to be sure of what it might be. Valves ar ok, the compression on all cylinders where ok.

Would be happy to get some advise.

The second thing is that I would like to buy a new right side panel. The colour is white/blue with a red stripe (550FII).

I highly appreciate if anyone could help me out with this.

Many thanks!

Hi Dave.........
Here's a little bit of insider info.....
If you watch Ebay over the next few days..... you'll see a cbx550 half motor appear.....

BARRELLS.... section.....

the one you want will be in paignton devon.
the bloke has LOTS of parts..... ( i've bought most of them )
he's a great bloke, and you'll pick up a bargain ( he does'nt sell rubbish, because if he did, i'd have stopped buying stuff long ago ! )

I cant be more specific as there might be a rush for parts, and you and I might miss out.

( would'nt want to cut my own parts lifeline ! )

hope you are lucky..... you should get it at a great price as I dont need it and wont be bidding ( you would'nt stand a chance if i was bidding! ) you can figure out who i am from reading his feedback.... ( i'm the one with MOST of the CBX stuff he's sold ! )

happy hunting. :-)

Hello everybody,

Nice to find this site and surprising as well. Have looked before and hardly found anything for CBX.

Q, I have a CBX550F2 with scrap engine. It was a runner but smoked. (54000mls) Trying to strip it I just couldn't get the barrels off without causing damage. I suspect it was ex courier as came from London area and had a hard life. Pistons, cams, head etc. all seem ok. But barrels F****d!

I know this is probably a stupid question but does anyone have a reasonably priced engine they don't want, or does anyone know if a different engine will fit the frame? (Doesn't appear to be much room though).

If I can't get one I might break it just to make some room. It's not standard colour but is more or less all there.

Cheers,

Dave Burrow.

Hello, does anybody know were to get a spare parts manual for CBX 550 F / F2 ?

I have just bought me a CBX 550 F2 with 56.000 km on the meter. It is a 1982 model. And yes, it has some noise from the motor. However after adjustment of valves and changing oil + filter I think the noise is not so "bad" anymore. By the way, earlier owner used syntetic oil. I have changed to mineral ( Kensoil 20-50 ). The installed 4-1 exhaust system was rusty. After searching the internet I found Jama Orginal 4-2 system (part no 95.1003) Bought and installed it. The engine has got more power on low rpm with this 4-2 system, compered with the old 4-1 exhaust.

Does anyone knows were to get a spare parts manual?

Dave, A common problem with the CBX is the locking up of disc brakes. This problem is almost always due to the failure of the hydraulic piston to retract. The piston stays in the "applied" position and puts a constant braking pressure on the rotor. Corrosion and dirt builds up behind the rubber seal in the caliper and prevents the free movement of the caliper piston. Take the caliper apart and replace and clean the seals and caliper. With properly set up brakes the wheel is able to rotate freely without any drag.
If the bike has been sitting a while or washed rust will form on the cast iron rotors causing drag or even prevent the wheel from turning. This light rust will be removed by a few application of the brake and should then turn freely.

Another question, does anyone have a list compatiable CBX 550 F2 4 into 1 exhausts.

The one that came with the bikes are shot, and I am looking either to replace the whole thing or just replace the silencer as the 4 pipes look ok.

Cheers

I have picked up a couple of CBX 550 F2 as a project, just to get some experience with motorcycle mechanics, and need a bit of advice.

The back brake seems to be grabbing against the disc, so that when it's on the stand the wheel will not turn freely.
I have taken off the back Wheel and stripped down the Disc Caliper, and the pistons seem to be always out and don;t fully return.(Are they surposed to)
Refilled the brake fluid and bled the brakes,
The Back brake will come on and hold the wheel but you get the feeling that there is little or no travel and if you pulled the back brake on it would lock on .
Could be that the new brake pads need a bit of wear first,

The front wheel seems the same, disc grabbing so it won't spin without putting some pressure on to move it around.

The Bikes have been stood a bit..

Any help much appriciated Sorry if this is a noddy question.

Dave

Hi,
Just bought ANOTHER CBX!
( CBX550F2 , 1983 )
So now i have two. One on road with 12months MOT and 11 months tax, and the other I am still working on.

Both have the 'rattle' at idle and when reved lightly, but it goes when you are in gear and moving ( well i think it just gets quieter really )
Is that the camchain then ? or primary chain ?
one bikes done 31k the other 38k.
I've bought a new tensioner ansd tensioner spring? that long thing... but i've not got a chain yet or fitted the new items. I'll probably do it this weekend coming.

Does ANYONE know the TRUE chain length of a NEW camchain?

The rattles ( on both bikes ) seem to eminate from the lower half of the motors, near the clutch cover... which makes me wonder if it's a primary chain prob?

where has everyone's RATTLES come from ? ( those of you who have experienced camchain rattle more than once in your lives are likely to know. and could impart the knowledge here for all us cbx virgins )

thanks in advance...

Richard.

all reference to reaplacement chains i've seen quote 530x104 ( 104 links )
You can use 'O-ring' or 'X-ring', but I'd imagine 'O-ring' is more than enough as this bike is'nt putting out massive power.

David Silvers website lists an 'O-ring' chain.

I use an O-ring 530x104, but that might be because I'm no longer on OEM sprockets.

I'd wait to see a few more opinions on this here before I rush off to buy something, but it's up to you.

The service manual says RK52005 M or DID 520V chain but does not mention the lenght. Can you use an O ring or X ring chain as a upgrade and how many links long is the chain.

Hi All,
I've bought a Honda Manual. so i dont need to learn italian anymore !

Dave, I've done it... I released all the air from the rear shock, unscrewed the valve, emptied the existing oil ( ATF ).. I 'tipped' it out, by gently rocking the shock back and forth in a horizontal position.. it takes about 15 mins to get it all out.
I used a plastic syringe to measure the ammount of fluid I expelled ( 390ml ) then used the same syringe with a plastic silicone/pvc tube attatched to 'inject' the new ATF into the shock.. ( at 20ml a time ). This way, i avoided having a massive air build up, and no loss of ATF, as it was'nt bubbling ( as the ATF was going in the narrow stem whilst the air was trying to get out )
I took plenty of photo's.... so i'll put them up somewhere if anyone needs to see them.
I filled the shock completely so NO air was left inside...
drained it out to the original figure, measured the difference, then put half of it back in.
Put it back on the bike and pumped it up.
It's made a difference, but not alot. Dont pump it more than half the official psi if you do this as there's only half the ammount of air in there now.

Oh....... and the biggest downside? if you release the air... you're in for a wet surprize!
That extra fluid puts the fluid level.. ABOVE the height of the air valve... so if you pump it up.. and release it. you're going to get wet and oil everywhere!

Of course. if you only want to replace the fluid to the original level, you'd be fine; but i'd suggest adding 10 to 20ml to account for losses whenever you've released the air in the past.
-----------------

Not happy....... I continued on my quest for a replacement rear shock.

I found a Laverda Zane White Power shock... ( off a bike that weighs 2kg more than the Hondas dry weight figure ) and this is 272mm eye to eye and 76mm wide ( so it fits )
These shocks are adjustable, and have a remote resovoir on a longish pipe, so you can mount it somewhere. Adjustable preload etc.. very nice.

But, i opted for a SHOWA monoshock unit ( CMZ-641 ) this is a Honda CB900 Hornet fitment ( 2002 )
The Hornet weighs 10Kg more than the 550F dry, but thats ok, as the SHOWA unit has adjustable preload on the spring.
it's 280mm eye to eye centres ( and that fits, as the 550f mounting points allow 10mm additional length )
The shock has a similar STROKE to the OEM unit as it's off a prolink bike also.

I need to have upper and lower spacers made as the mounting eye's/bushings, are narrower than the OEM unit.
the diameter of the bolt hole is the same though.
Once I know the EXACT size of the spacers, i'll let you know , and I'll let you know the best method of fitment.. as just fitting free spinning spacers would'nt be good enough.. as it could lead to the lower mounting bolt bending in th emiddle, because the load spreading would be on a smaller section of the bolt. I think alloy spacers that closely fit the lower prolink assembly would be better, OR.. a new steel sleeve machined up so that it's the same length as the original one.)

I dry fitted the shock and replaced the rear wheel, jumped on the bike... and found I've managed to gain seat height! YES ! success! 50mm extra.

I could increase this further by winding up the preload ring on the shock.

The shock does'nt 'top-out' the suspension, with the bike on it's wheels, so thats good.

Did I say I've taken photo's? :o)

The only headache. is that the remote for the shock lives at the end of a pipe thats just 120mm long. This is a major hurdle as it limits where the remote can be placed.
Currently, mine lives just above the clutch housing, but I'm going to either attatch it to the swing arms top right side, or mount it off the bottom of the airbox ( loosing the breather container for now, whilst i make a new one that i can relocate )
The ideal solution, would be to have a longer pipe connecting the remote and the shock, but as the shock is full of nitrogen, i fear this is beyond me, and I'm not sure I could get it refilled!

Hope this is usefull to someone.

The Honda Manual has directions on how to change the oil/seal in the rear shock. There is an Italian version on line.
http://digilander.libero.it/ierovante/cbx/index.htm.

Stock CBX shock is 270 mm. I currently use 45 to 50 psi air to get 25mm sag when I sit on it.
Stock 86 VFR shock is 270 but the spring is way to stiff. With all of my 170 lbs it just started to sag. I have not yet experimented with springs yet an most likely the dampening rate will be off.
Stock CBR600 F2 is 283 mm. This is 13 mm longer and might just work. I have one coming to experiment with. I will let you know.

the effect you mentioned with the air/oil was normal with my cbx , I forget the exact amount I jacked mine up , I think it was less than 25 mm but because of the multiplication factor that equates to about four times as much at the rear wheel ! I put about forty five psi in the shock and that gave a twenty five mm sag , as for recharging the shock with oil I didn't get round to that but I once read an article in ubg and this guy changed the oil in his rear shock like you suggested , I was going to remove the valve and then carefully pump out the old oil into a measured container and then replace it with new fork oil (perhaps with a small extra ammout to replace losses )
best of luck Dave

Hi again....
I've dismantled the rear end of my CBX550FC..
When i released the air from the rear shock, I got a mixed blast of air and oil ( creamy beige coloured ) . is this normal ?

I've looked at the lower section of the monoshock ( under the rubber gaitor ) and there are no leaks there.

I was wondering if the oil and air sharing the same interior space of the monoshock was normal?

If it is.... I'd like to change the oil in it.... by unscrewing the air valve, letting the existing oil drain out, then refilling through the same open valve hole.
If this is feasable, and the oils meant to be in there.... how much oil do i put in? and what weight? ATF like the front forks? or 10w - 15w etc... fork oil?

My rear shock ( previous to dissasembly ) was saggy, in as much as it maintained regular free standing seat height of 785mm, but once you sat on the bike it dropped to 705mm.
From what i've been reading, I gather it's only meant to drop 5 to 10 mm ( five to ten millimetres ).

I considered reworking the top mounting for the monoshock, to regain some height, but having looked more closely, I see i'd only get 25mm max as the suspension bars/levers/lower assembly stop any further increase as they touch a cross section bar... ( oh go look. i cant explain it ! ) :o)

My monoshocks free length eye to eye centres ... ( off the bike ) is 270mm.

I've seen an aftermarket monoshock listed for the CBX ( see previous posting for details ) and strangely it states 352mm length? There's no way you could fit a 352mm shock under there ! ? confusing.

HAGON want one hundred and ninety pounds ( GBP ) for a monoshock for this bike ! ouch !

Does anyone know of a monoshock ( other than a 1986 VFR750F ) that will fit this bike?

I started looking for one the right length, or a bit shorter, from a bike with the same dry weight..( i could make an extension mounting )

I've not had much luck yet.
