hi all

Dave, whats too feel guilty about? you SHOULD have haggled the price, why did'nt you? But.... if YOU think YOU got a bargain don't worry. Just get it T&T'd and use it NOW!!
You know it makes sense!

.....but on the other hand, if you still want to feel bad about it, here is a list of options to choose from.

The bloke was selling it to pay for his dead son/daughters headstone.

The bloke was selling it to pay for a kidney transplant for his six year old son/daughter

The bloke was selling it to be able to make his next mortgage payment

The bloke was selling it to pay the ransome on his wife/kids

The bloke was selling it to pay off the blackmailers

Rob.

P.S.
Basmaf.Yes i was there! Do you still have the photo's? I seem to have lost my copies. But if you find the one of you in the leather mini and stockings I will have a copy.
But lets not talk about the one with you and me the cucumber and the bucket of live squid..............

I was thinking just the same thing about the inner seal.
My old G5 went that way.
If it locks up again, I will.
It could do with an outer dust seal just as a last cover
Thanks

dont know what went wrong at the end of the last message, but.....

Basmaf, i had problems in the past with pisons siezing. would recommend doing what Dave said first, but if the problems continue it would be worth getting the pistons out and checking the inner seal. have noticed that the ally "flowers"/oxidises...whatever. This causes the seal to distort and cause problems. only solution was to strip it right down and clean it all up and replace seals.
Unlike Dave i only do what is needed, when its needed!
More interested in riding it!!

To the wives/partners of Basmaf & Harry.

In the event of you finding a large A4 size book in the bedroom with the title "Honda CBX Service Manual" your are advised to hide it!
Under no account should you allow your spouse/partner to read it while in bed.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

Acceptable places where/when you may allow them to read this material:

Shed/garage- but only in daylight or early evening. If left alone with this for too long they may become disorientated and disappear for days on end. It is a good idea to arrange some sort of timer to warn them that their time is up, a design for this can be forwarded to you should you reqire. You will need a plug-in mains timer, a length of mains cable and some crocodile clips.

Toilet- They will of course try to lock themselves in, but the fact that they will be disturbed on a regular basis will lure them out. A Tip. Make sure you drink lots beforehand, so you have a genuine excuse.

Computer room- They will of course be performing the role that the book is intended for, imparting information to other sad individuals who suffer this affliction.
But take care that you monitor the situation. It is far to easy for them to fall prey to some sick individuals who will tempt them to go for "rides" or "rallies". Under no circumstances should you allow this. Before you know it, you will be wearing leather and sleeping in a tent in some field near Newcastle in mid Febuary and entered in a "Miss Rally" contest aginst your will.

Rob

P.S. on a more serious note...you jammy sod Dave! THAT vfr!!
was the bloke drunk, have you HPI'd it, is the frame straight? i think i will join Basmaf and see if you want to go three ways on this weeks lottery!!
Nice one Dave, just get it out on the road and enjoy!

And jus

Cheers Dave.

I have been down this road before, but was worried in case it was master cylinder problems.
It turned out to be a seized piston on the calliper. The rear most one.
It took some serious pumping to sort it out after taking the wheel out and pulling the disk from between the pads.
The thing is, I checked, cleaned, and lubed the lot during the pad swap over Christmas, and the full job the month before that as well.
I pumped them out far enough to rotate them.
I polished them with a cloth and brake fluid then pushed them in and pumped them out until they both moved smooth and easy as a pair.
By the marks on the pistons, someone one had been here before me.
I am now just waiting till the end of February when they will need doing again.
God I hope not.

I got into a regular routine on my cbxs rear brake ( about three times a year )it probably would have benefitted from a complete rebuild but as this method worked and only took a couple of minutes what the heck !now what I never suffered from, was a siezed slider bolt so if this was your case you would probably have to strip the caliper, if youve heard this saga before .. sorry ! get some of that brake cleaning spray from your local auto shop , I know I go on about this stuff but it it amazing ! and one of those green plastic pan scourers that you clean the pots with ( what do mean, clean the pots ), now remove the pads and gently pump the pistons out ( not all the way ) if one sticks jam the moving piston with a piece of wood 'till its partner joins it, now spray the whole works, and polish with the pan scourer , force the pistons back in with a piece of two by one (the washing line prop is perfect )between the back of the caliper and the swing arm , I found repeating this a couple of time sorted it and if you really want to push the boat out buy some caliper grease and smear this on the pistons.
good luck Dave

Hi Harry
Good news about the manual.
I hope you never have to use it in anger.
Good luck copying it.
Please don$@CU(J tell me whodunit, till I get a read.
It is usually the butler, but I bet it was the gardener this time$@)e(J..
When you are ready let me know.

Now to my little breaking problem.
The rear brake is sticking on.
New pads, fluid, and rubber cover have been fitted.
I suspect the push rod or piston is just corroded, and so is sticking, but to be sure I thought I would ask first.
Advise, as always, is very appreciated.

Just as I thought - a good place to find :))

Thanks very much for the welcoming messages, Rob, dave, Basmaf and everyone.

I collect the bike on Sunday - have hired a Transit to bring home the pieces :-(( I will let you all know how many pieces and whether they seem to belong to just the one bike.

There is a definite lack of CBX brochures available netwise - would anyone have a CBX brochure they would like to scan and make available to the board?

Felicitations Basmaf

Ou manual arrived today - thick as a telephone book - it is the same manual as the online-manual referred to by Dave, except it is in English. I am going to start copying from page one, and will keep you informed as to progress (have to copy at work!).Looks like a cracker of a read, though, I almost cant wait for my engine to seize so I can start to use the manual!!

Hi Kevin
As someone fairly new here myself, I can say that this has to be one of the better boards around.
They have helped me out quite a bit, so sit back, and enjoy.

Dave.
Do you want to share a lottery ticket.
(and he gets a manual as well......)
I am not really jealous at all, really, truly, honest guv

not guilty ! my cbx is still lurking under a sheet behind my shed , the more I think about the cbx / g5 hybrid the more I fancy it , no the vfr is one of the current ones and I still can't believe my luck , it's one of the sweetest looking bikes I've ever seen , I was the only enquiry I think because it was advertised as a '86 model for 00 every one thought it was the earlier " chocolate cam " models, its the first of the vfrs with the conventional swingarm but this has been swopped for a braced item which looks like a fireblade one, its also got the later model 17 inch wheels , oh to cap it off a stainless exhaust system , the seller said there where two problems with it , duff battery (did you know it takes the same battery as the cbx, sorted)and it needed a new front tyre ( part worn from breaker 0)my local tyre dealer wanted 70 quid for a new one, cheek ! tax and mot run out this month so I might leave it off the road til march or april.
Kevin

Hi kevin welcome to the board,
did you buy this bike off a bloke called Dave by any chance!! ha ha ha.

Dave which vfr is it? if thats not a daft question. i dont suppose its one of the current look ones (not for that money)
the one that came with a nose fairing and usually in the honda red/white/blue?

just wait till you get used to it, i bet you'll be throwing it around like the 550.

Rob

PS did you sell the 550 to a guy called Kevin!! if you did we will leave you to answer all his questions.....snigger...

Wow, this board looks like it might be useful.

I have just bought a CBX 550 as a non-runner and I know nothing about them. I collect it this weekend.

Mine has had its forks dismantled so I'm going to have some fun working out how to put it together. The engine doesn't run either at present.

Hopefully, I can get some help from here, when I need it?

I saw some mention of a workshop manual - I would be very interested in getting hold of one.

Kevin

went for my first ride on the vfr yesterday , couldnt really do a good assesment because I'm one of those riders who take a while to get a "feel" for a machine ( thats why I keep buying volvos, there all the same !)the first thing that struck me was when you blip the throttle it sounds like its not running on all cylinders ( I know the feeling )as if its trying to be a twin or a triple but as the revs rise it just screams like a four I suppose its a v four thing or .... Ive bought another pup ! needless to say it goes like the clappers, but when it came to the twisty bits I could have given it a run for its money on the cbx , I didnt realise how nimble the old 550 was ! still its early days yet .

The Guzzi never had any problems starting, the problem was it liked stopping to much, usually caused by faulty wiring.
And as for the part ex, you really don$@CU(J know how tempting the offer is, but I supposes you wont throw you Guzzi in with the deal as well$@)e(J.

AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Honda 360 G5, loved and riding.
How can you really use those words all together in the same sentence?
I fitted the 360 engine to my 250 G5 when the rings broke, but seized the head 200 miles later.
I am convinced that the free tractor biased oil I used had nothing to do with it.
Well it was free
I would pay real money to see a 360 with enclosed discs, a monoshocked rear end, and not forgetting the lovely laverda seat unit!.
Good, I love this group.
Ride 2 live, straight to the funny farm

I'm getting unsettled now, I dont usually have this much good luck in one week , just rang insurers to transfer from the cbx.....no transfer fee ..premium the same , fifty quid a year with breakdown insurance thrown in. but ... they wouldnt let me pay in installments !mind you on the way over to see the bike on the m62 a brick took one of the volvos headlight out , so its off to the scrappy this afternoon.

No you won't be getting rid of me that easy ! by now I think us guys have more in common than owning cbx's ( group certifiction most probably )although at the moment all my energies are focused on my new "toy" I still have plans for the cbx,if you remember I still have my old cb 360 g5 tucked away in the shed ( no cringing at the back Basmaf , although remember it is fitted with a laverda seat unit! )well anyway I always loved riding that little honda which I've owned since '76 but what I thought were its short commings were , poor brakes and a flexi swingarm , do you see which way my thoughts are drifting ? yes a 360 with enclosed discs and a monoshocked rear end .
will this madness never end ?

Gentlemen...

You really should have a wife like mine! After selling off my 1954 Victoria, and my 1948 Garelli 38cc, my VeloSolex (1963) and my Puch Maxi, I finally scraped up enough to buy my dream bike, a Honda in-line 4, to wit: my CBX. After which my wife says: "Remember, thats your Christmas present from me, I wont be getting you anything else....."

(I did get my revenge, though - I gave her 4 sparkplugs for Christmas, you should have seen her face! It was worth it though, most of my scars and bruises have long disappeared....)

Hi Dave
glad to hear you have sorted a bike, hope its all ok. sounds like a bargain. Hope you wont be leaving us?
Tell us more about it as soon as you can.
what are you going to do with the cbx? i hope you keep it and get it going again.

By the way Basmaf, i would be more than happy to take the wife off your hands if you have no use for her. As a guzzi owner i like somthing that takes a bit of prodding to get going. (you should know, you owned one!!) so long as you will take mine in part exchange?

A splendid idea, and only spoilt by 3 faults.
1. I spent the cash buying a dodgy starter motor. Grrrrrrr
2. Ayesha, She who must be obeyed will not allow any more bikes around the house. I have 4.
3. I spent the cash buying a dodgy starter motor. Grrrrrrr
(Sorry, number 1 was such a biggie; I decided to mention it twice.)
(Name the show
But otherwise, fantastic suggestion. Thankyou.
Now if anybody wants to part ex their bike for the wife.
One careful owner from new.
Never raced or rallied.
36000 miles on the clock,
No service history though, cos I do it myself.
Never burns smoke, but drinks petrol.
Somtimes refuses to start, but a bit of prodding soon sorts her out....

Oh Er Missus

Yeah, go on, Basmaf, buy the bike and sell me the seat, side panels and rear indicator setup - flog the motor to Dave - lift the instrument cluster for yourself and use the proceeds for a holiday in the Bahamas! Ebay recently had an instrument cluster going, although it probably didnt have the modern mph scale ;-)

Hi chaps.
Has anybody got a complete set of spare clocks they are willing to sell for a UK spec CBX550?
Mine are ok, and no, I haven't piled her yet, but they have been in some conflict and look scruffy, and they allow water in, so the glass steams up.
I must admit, cash is a bit limited, but I do have some spare, so please let me know.
Thanks

http://digilander.libero.it/ierovante/cbx/man/01-09.JPG

I think I will take out my pocket knife and whittle a set of brackets. Thanks for the help - its true, you do meet the nicest people on a Honda!
