Thanks Dave - would these brackets be welded on to your frame (no, the CBX!), or are they the dig-out-the-hacksaw-and-make-your-own bolt-on variety (see, I just cant find anything approaching the likes of a bracket onto which one could bolt anything, let alone my indicators).

A VFR - nice - take along your laptop and record the engine note for us!

there are a couple of short dog legged brackets hanging from the frame , the indicators bolt through these and stick out just below the fibre glass.
dave.
If you need more info I'll venture outside and do some measuring for you.
ps whilst looking for a new motor I came across a vfr at a price thats too good to believe , taking a look this weekend.

Gentlemen..

I have no rear indicators on my CBX, because the previous owner had a rack with (I imagine) the indicators attached to the rack. Now, I have a set of indicators, but I cant figure out how to attach them! By looking at photos on the net, it almost looks as if they are attached to the rear mudguard close to the brake light, but I can find no orifice capable of accepting an indicator. There are some attachment points on the frame, but they are covered by the rear plastic "tail". How do I get my indicators on the bike (short of tying them on with a bit of string) - any ideas? Otherwise I will just fashion a bracket and mount this to the frame lugs, but are these brackets commercial items?

Hi Harry.
I kept an eye on the last hour or so.
It was a close run thing, but well done.
Price is ok by me, so just let me know where you want me to send how much.
Cheers

Hi Basmaf - got it! After a weeks waiting, a final dash the last few minutes and Bingo! my first succesful bid on Ebay. Price shot up, but I got it for 40 Euro. About the same price as a new Haynes in Denmark, but shop manuals are rare as hens teeth. Let me know if the price is ok for you, if so I will send the manual on to you after taking my copy.

No worries, Basmaf.

I'll take a copy (if I win the bidding, deadline = tomorrow pm) and mail the handbook to you. I pay postage from Germany to DK, you pay from DK to UK plus half price of book (if you agree to my final bid). Anytime you want to bail out, let me know. Otherwise, the arrangement suits me fine, as I prefer my handbooks in loosleaf form, in plastic pockets in a binder!

Regards

I am bidding on the manual too! Lets coordinate - I would be happy to share the costs plus copying and have the manual as a loose leaf photocopy - what do you say?

Sorry Harry, I just found the exchange starters, further up the list.
160 euro is 105 quid, but that is exchange only, plus postage.
Not a bad price if you don't need the bike daily, and can wait the 2 weeks for delivery
Pity they came through 2 weeks late.
I have already spent the cash.
Bugger, but thanks again anyway.

Thanks for the pointer Harry
The starter is for the 650 version, and if the photo is accurate, the mounting is different to the 550, though the internals may be similar though.
I may have found someone to renovate starters though, at a reasonable price.
Stay tuned.
I think I will bid on the workshop manual though.
I did pick up a owners handbook though, for 3 quid.
All info I find will also be on my website.
Thanks guys

For your information, there is quite a lot of CBX550 stuff going on the German Ebay site (even a starter motor, Basmaf!) - if anyone needs translating drop me a line and I will be happy to oblige. There is even something in there about a CBX550F meet in Germany soon, see also http://www.cbx550f.de/

BTW, nice page, Dave - stylish and a good read.

Hi Gary
How you doing? Hope you get the chance to do some work soon, now that the christmas rush is over!! Just in time for the january sales rush?

Went up to the shed this afternoon with the thought of getting the bike out for a quick spin. But after i fell arse over tit on a frosty paving slab i decided against it!!

I think you might have to mail the photos to Yutaka, if you want them posting. His e-mail address is around so should not be a problem, why not drop him a line and ask?

If he is reading this, maybe he can let us know how to post pics?

Rob

Sorry chaps, I should have informed you all earlier.
My only excuse is, I was suffering from tunnel vision.
DK spares are breaking a CBX550
Tel 01782 862200
I have had the starter motor off it, but they have an engine in a frame.
I do remember someone asking about a lump ?
Was it you dave?

Ok, get ready for this. I phoned about a new starter.
Are you sitting down?
475 plus tax, and delivery, and it has to come from Japan.
I am sorry to say that I did ask if she, the lady on the other end of the phone, was having a new years laugh at my expense?
Dave silver has a new one for 159 plus tax in their catalogue.
But I started phoning some breakers listed in the latest MCN.
I got a 2nd hand one for a ton plus tax and a tenner for next day shipping.
He tested it buy connecting it to a battery, and spinning the engine. He said it was working, but just to be sure, I paid with plastic It will be sent out Thursday.
I found it on the 2nd phone call. Just after buying that, I bought a lottery ticket, to keep the luck going.
I will keep the old starter, and keep an eye out for bushes to see if I can get some replacements bushes, which are available from Dave Silver at 7.50 a set, and I assume that this means 2 bushes
Thanks to you all for your advice and comments, especially Dave.
I will have a pint for you tonight
Hopefully, all will be up and running by Friday.

hi all

how you doing colin? seems like an age since we heard from you. sorry to hear that you might have to get rid of the cbx. i hope that it will go to a good home (Dave, this means you) i hope this new car that you have is worth the garage space? dont tell me its an escot or mondeo!!!!

by the way Dave, i was round a mates last night, and saw a copy of loot. someone selling a cbx for spares/repair for a hundred and fifty quid. it was dated 21st (twenty one) december. if you want me to get the phone number, let me know. leics based i think.

Harry, loved the bit about the fish! i had a look at your site, good stuff! I have to admit to owning an MZ TS150 (i think) many years ago. stop laughing at the back!!
it was a winter hack and i hated it! but the owners book was good for a laugh!
the only reason i remember the bike is an event involving an ex-girlfriend, a late night/early morning ride to her house and a bat. (the kind that comes out after dark and lives in belfrys!!)

but i wont bore you with that one.........

I tried to find a second hand starter without success , so I had to overhaul my old one , on mine the com was completely shot ( like the rest of the bike ) but as I have a lathe I undercut this , yours sound ok, so you can replace the brushes , unfortunatly honda dont give you terminations so you have to cut the brush tails at the brush and solder them , this isnt as scary as it sounds ( provided you can solder ) youll need quite a big iron though and the lead has to be scrupiously clean ( use plenty of flux ) . I couldnt bring myself to buy genuine honda brushes ( at thirty two pounds for a set )so I did some hunting , in the end I found some excactly the same at a car jumble , even if they're a bit bigger you can file them down, and you dont even need the tails in the same place as the originals , provided the brushes move freely , let us know how you go on , if you fancy splashing out david silver spares do a new one at about two hundred pounds !!( god knows what honda would charge)
dave
Colin
thanks for that but youre a bit too far away

Dave.
Yep, x2
I mean the copper braid that connects the brush has come off, at the bush end, x2
The brush is pushed by a spring on to the commutator.
I have pics, that I will post on the website.
These are the braids that do not have sleeves on. Both have broken.
I think I need a new starter, rather than trying to fix this one..
Any ideas please?
Thanks
-Basmaf

HI Dave, and thanks for the quotes chaps.
If I can be of any further assistance, do just ask.
After rebuilding the front end, I can now say, she is firm YEP
I will play with the air pressures. 11 psi may be a bit hard for me, but I am happy with the rebuild.
The starter motor though has gone from bad to worse.
It started after a run, but then reverted back to the same.
Finally it refused to turn tonight. She just clicked. er.....
I stripped it again and found 2 brushes, the 2 without the sleaving, had split between the carbon heads and the copper leads.
Bugger.
Any ideas, and it is New Year eve tomorrow, just to make it easier
Thanks chaps
