Hi chaps
Thanks for all the info.
Left fork leg leaks on side stand. Time to use the centre stand.
I see that some of the prices I listed failed to come out.
I can buy a JAMA for 200.
A Motad for 187.
A BSM system for 183.
EXACTREP will do one for 322.23
So far the BSM is fav, and Dave Silver should have one in by the NEC show
I am not to worried about extra ponies, I am more concerned about not re-jetting, and, I believe, Motad are having serious money flow worries at present
Brake pads.
Dave Silver do pattern pads for a 7 quid pair.
Hein Gericke charge 9 quid a pair.
I must admit that I now have a bike I wanted to own for 20 years and am not disappointed at all, so far.
I have a few things to do, but expected that.
I also intend to do some of my IAM work on her during the summer months.
So the phrase "just enjoy it for what it is", not arf

Rob, On to your probs. Sorry, I haven't got a clue.
I had electrical probs with mine, not mechanical.
An idea though, pull the gearbox apart again, and get a mate to rebuild it with you, as a sanity check.
It may work, especially if he is not mechanically minded.
You will have to explain things, show him, and double check.
Another tip is where you buy your Guzzi bits, to ask the mechanic for general info, and build up from there.
He may also have a lunchtime pint
Also, have you had a word with Gary?
http://www.btinternet.com/~gary.hawksworth/guzzi.htm
He may be able to help.
Cheers

Question I am wondering what everyone is doing about the decals for the tank and side covers when you are restoring your CBX 550F bikes. Is there anyone out there making the decals for the bikes and if so does anyone have a address and phone number. I have talked with Honda and the only decals available is the Type II (red strip) decals for the tail feathers. Thanks for any help.

hi Basmaf
the reason i ask is because i am restoring a le mans mkII,
i stripped both these items to get them vapour blasted.
the gearbox has been sat on my spare room floor for the better part of three years and still fails to engage gears.
dreading the rear beval box re-build. but the engine should be a walk in the park in comparison.
but i have been a bit like Dave with this (the couch/computer/cbx are distractions) sooner or later i will do somthing with them, funds permitting i hope to get raceco or the like to stick them back together for me. but knowing what a tightwad i am, it will be a while yet.

anyway, back to you problems! if you tried what i said in the earlier message, you should be able to hear the pro-link creaking. Anyone else care to comment! as far as am concerned the rear end does make some noise, but the suspension should be free when you bounce the rear end.
the left hand fork seal problem is common to a lot of bikes if you leave them on the side stand a lot.
as far as the pipes are concerned, does it really matter if the original style one gives you another 5bhp or a bit more mid-range tourque...blah,blah,blah.yea i do agree that it looks good but if you want speed, get a honda blackbird/suzi howsyourbushy! me and the other guys here will all tell you the same thing, its a twenty year old bike, what do you expect. mine has a motad neta on it,and will still spank my mate on a twisty A/B/C road on his big suzuki, but on a straight road i may as well wave him goodbye.
just enjoy it for what it is.

following on from previous

Other than that, she looks very original, and clean considering her age.
I need a grabrail, or better still, a rack, if anybody has either for sale please.

Sorry about this being so long, but some of the info may help other owners and I just love going the long way home.

Rob
I never did strip the box or rear bevel drive unit. Mine worked fine.
I can only assume that mine was one of the very few that was greased on assembly at the factory. They must have been having a training session at the time.

Hi chaps
Thanks for the advice.
The current pipe is a NETA.
It has a few more holes in it than the original design intended, so is a bit loud.
The NETA is not currently listed for the CBX550.
They do, or did, list a NETA for the GS550 and GPZ550, so I am wondering if it has been 杜adeto fit, as it looks a bit off centre on the headers for pots 1 and 4.
I do remember reading, years ago, that the OEM exhaust was specifically designed to maximise the available power, and consideration should be taken when replacing it.
Yes, no ????
I do like the look of her in standard 4 in to 2 trim.

I can buy a JAMA for 00. This is a 4 into 2 OEM look-a-like
A Motad for 87. 4 in 1.
David Silver will supply a BSM system for 83. This also is a 4 into 2 OEM look-a-like
EXACTREP will do one for 22.23. Exact match. Ouch
A recommended one is made by SITO.
I am still waiting for a reply to my email.
The new pipe will be quieter so my help me find the creak.
I can only hear it whilst riding her.
Thanks for the pointers, and I am assuming that previous owners did the minimal maintance only.
If I do it, then I know that it has done.

I bought a Hyanes manual, 3 quid at an auto jumble. The buy of the day.
I have stripped the brakes, cleaned them and replaced the oil. I do need pads soon.
Dave Silver do pattern pads for a pair.
Hein Gericke charge a pair.

I have been able to lube all bar 1 of the anti dive linkage bolts, the big top one, and the anti dive dial still spins.
I have noticed, this morning, that I may have blown the left side fork seal. bugger.
I will get fork seals at the NEC bike show, then change the lot.
Other than that, se looks very original, and very, very clean cons

Hi Basmaf
go along with what Gary says, but try to narrow it down a bit. stick the bike on the side stand and press down on the rear end/grab rail. my original cbx suffered a similar creaking noise when compressed. the pro-link rear suspension works with a series of linkages with bushes. as you can imagine after a few years of road grime they tend to start siezing up, creaking even! in my case you could push the rear end down and it would stay there. you might get away with stripping down, cleaning/lubricating. but be prepared to replace the bushes if it comes to it.
On the subject of rear suspension, has anyone replaced the rear shock with anything other than a standard unit? and what are your experiences, better? could'nt be worse!!
by the way Basmaf, i note from your web site that you have had a le-mans. did you ever strip the gearbox or rear drive beval box?

Rob
p.s. still no offers on the subject of 650 nighthawks!!!

Right Basmaf if you want a cheap replacement exhaust then why not try a motad 4-1 exhaust, more plentiful than a jama.
As for your suspension probs only by stripping the front end downwill you find out exactly what the problem is,you don`t state whether the former owners have ever changed the fork seals, springs or oil.My sugestion is to try the simplest things first I.E. change the fork seals and oil first then work you way from there.Best idea is to get a haynes manual for the cbx550 and see if you can do this on your own if not try a local back street bike shop as these often turn out to be the ones that will take on the work without ripping you off unlike most high street dealerships.

Hi
I am newbie to this message board, so please forgive mistakes
I have recently bought a CXBX550 F1, 1982 vintage.
I always wanted one, but could never afford it when they were new
It needs a new full exhaust system, and have been looking at JAMA one.
Does anyone have experience of this company, or other recommendations?

I also have a creaking noise from the suspension when going over bumps, and climbing off the bike.
I suspect it is a bush on the anti-dive forks.
Again, does anybody have any ideas?

Apart from that, It is great, and I love it.
Cheers
-Basmaf

hi all
thanks for your response,(must have been the threat of a cx500/nighthawk thread)im going to do a Dave and try to stay out of the shed unless its a dire emergency, thats a sunny day and non-running bike!!! but then again the spiders always put me off....especialy when there big enough to hotwire the bike and ride it round the garden!!
and you think im joking?
yes Gary i did do the valves and carb sync...etc,etc and im sure it is running a whole lot better.
and as it sounds like your bike is doing about the same as mine, which are both a little better on economy than Daves i will leave it at that and just enjoy it. but then as Dave says he has an excuse for his low mpg.
looks like mine and Garys excuse must be the fact that we are nine stone weaklings!!!!

now, back to the nighthawk 650, does any one fancy a nice long chat about the head-turning looks....zzzzzzzzzz

Sorry Rob your on ya own with this one.(i`ve nevr head the intelligance to work out my mpg...LOL...i just fill her up when she needs some juice).Mind you 150/155 miles sounds pretty reasonable for a cbx, i`d havce to say i usaually put a tenners worth in every 5 working days an my round trip to an from work is 36 miles a day.By the way did you do your service?

Rob,

Having never had my bike running my mpg is great depending on which way you look at it. Definitely a bit rich by what your saying. 150ish doesn't sound too bad though.

I get about 135 mls before reserve , but I think my six foot seventeen stone frame has a big influence !! My cbx runs weak on small throttle openings which gives me an erratic tickover, I improved it a bit by replacing the o rings on the mixture screws , but I'm convinced it's pulling air in from somewhere. I promised to strip it down this winter but i'm finding it hard to get my bum off the couch and go out to the shed !( theres always next year )

me again!
just to satisfy myself that my motor is running rich, can any of you confirm your mileage on a full tank? sorry if i have asked this before, but i have to satisfy my own doubts.
i get about 150/155ish before it switches to reserve. i stick about a tenners worth of petrol in to top it up to the brim.
no KPL figures please, my small brain cant cope with these, so, uk riders get checking your mpg. Dave,Gary,Colin,John (you might ride a suzi John but your comments are still wanted)
if no one answers, i will start a thread about CX500s/nighthawk 650s and keep it going for a couple of weeks.

hi Dave
your right about the low end grunt on a twin, my guzzi was always more managable i thought than this particular cbx.
but i dont remember my original cbx being this way, but that was twenty years ago, and fresh out of a crate from honda.
must be me then. but i am still convinced that its running on the rich side.

I'm glad you mentioned the low speed impetuosity , I thought it was me having owned twins in the past with loads of low speed "grunt"! its great when you want to go for it but the bike doesn't feel happy when you're pootling about. Maybe it's something to do with the valve timing. (or maybe my advanced years!)

hi all
finaly got my valve clearence sorted, and checked the carbs with my new carbtune gauge. bike seems to pull a bit better,but......
still fells like its running on the rich side, i will try to get the carbs off and clean them up during the winter. but it still starts with very little choke, even stone cold.
which points to a rich mixture i would assume.
i will do a plug check this w/end to see if it is rich
dont know how to describe it really but it also still feels constricted at low speed/revs, like it wants you to drop a gear/speed up....
am i being too picky with the old girl,
as ever i look forward to your words of wisdom.

I need to change the cam chain tensoner guide and slipper. I have read your articales saying that it is quite common but I have not seen anyone refer to the extent of tear down required. Do you have to remove the enginge from the frame. The engine has only 8,000 km on it but it had a hard life before I bought it. Any help as to how far I have to tear it down would be greatful.

Thanks Robert Jerome
