I need to change the cam chain tensoner guide and slipper. I have read your articales saying that it is quite common but I have not seen anyone refer to the extent of tear down required. Do you have to remove the enginge from the frame. The engine has only 8,000 km on it but it had a hard life before I bought it. Any help as to how far I have to tear it down would be greatful.

Thanks Robert Jerome

hi Dave

i think i understood that bit, its so that the rocker arm does not twist, but you would'nt have thought that it would suffer much from a twisting, torsional effect, but hey who am i to argue with honda.

I know what you mean about the haynes manual, I've just made sure the cam lobe was opposite the valve lifter. The main thing I found was to use two sets of feeler gauges simultainiously or you end up chaising your own tail going from one adjuster to the other.

this is going to sound like a daft question, but here goes...
when checking the valve clearance am i right in thinking that the position of the cam chain sprockets does not make any odds, so long as you make sure the valve in question is closed, you should be able to check the clearance?
the reason i ask is because if you read the haynes version it says to line up the punch marks/bolts, depending on if you are doing the inlet or exhaust valves, it then goes on to state that you should rotate the engine 180 degrees to check the others???
trouble is it would seem that when the marks are in line with the head, only one valve is closed. am i missing somthing? ie. does it go 360degrees for the next one, etc,etc
may i now remind you that i am more used to good old agricultural italian twins.
i never did this on my first cbx, had a mate in a garage to do it for me. cheapskate that i am!!!
but then again i can get those wheels off a cbx like a pro!!
your comments please.....

could i bugger!!
gave up for this weekend, but i will have another go next week.
but does anyone know of a source for a proper tool for this job? the code for the one in M&P seems to indicate that its discontinued.

hi all

will have to take a look this weekend at the carbs. from memory it was the getting them back in that was the hard bit. any tips on getting the things back into the air-filter side again, think i even tried heating the plastic/rubber to get them in position....
maybe i will forget this and just get it out for a blast....

sad lazy sod....

The carbs do have rubber diaphragms. Just stripped mine down. Watch when you remove the pilot screws and if you blow them out with compressed air. There's a small washer and o-ring behind the spring that will shoot out somewhere. Might be worth while counting the amount of turns on all the screws before you remove them.

No i have not made any adjustmaents to my carbs as far as i know they are balanced and the plugs the right greyish colour. If you do pull your carbs apart stip em down 1 at a time so as you don`t confuse youself as to which part came out of which carb, can`t remeber if these carbs have rubber diagphrams on em? like the early kwacka zeds did, they used to foul up an engines performance if they had the tinyest split in em,check for that as well. All i can say Rob is take your time don`t rush it and if your unsure about anything give me a buzz on me e-mail an i`ll try to help out as much as poss mate...

hi all

sorry to hear you sold the bike john. what have you bought to replace it? and dont say a car!! colins got one for sale if you want one, stick it at the back of the shed for a rainy day!! best of luck and have fun with whatever you bought.

thanks for that gary, i think i just needed a bit of reassurance. you repeated my very words about the bike being twenty odd year old technology. i ordered a set of vacuum gauges even before posting the message. the bike seems to be running a bit rich, it fouls the plugs every so often when trying to start it. have you ever made any adjustments to the carbs? i have no problem with pulling an engine apart but carbs scare me stupid! any tips?

thanks

Is anybody interested in buying an F2. I started to rebuild it but I'm afraid I need funds for another cause. The frame has been powder coated along with the stands and disc covers. The rolling chassis is complete with stainless fasteners. The engine is stripped for painting and rebuilding with some of the sans blasting done. I have a brand new tailpiece in its Honda wrapper. New profiled cams. New clutch plates. Anybody interested can e-mail me and I'll fill you in about it. I'm in Edinburgh for those interested.

Cheers
Colin.

right lets answer jo`s question first,as rob says tr4y m&p for a copy headlight you will probaly be able to get a 550 f headlight,if not try david silver honda spares.Or if your really stuck try getting hold of 250n/400n superdreams headlight they are more or less the same headlight...
Right rob 90ish is not too bad for 20ish year old 550,but i did get 110 out of my roadworthy one a couple of weeks back one quiet sunday morn as i was on my way to work down the m6 in staffs, but she felt as if she was straining once she hit the ton.So 1st thing i would do is strip th carbs give em a clean and check for wear and tear, check the inlet rubbers for splits and tears, once they are all back together get hold of some carb balancers and try to balance em and last of all treat her to a full service you know oil, plugs, air filter and take the cam cover and check your valve clearances(check your brakes are not binding as well as this can slow your speed down as well mine have to be hit with a rubber mallet once a week to clear all the crud out).Let us know Rob how you get on?

I live in western Canada (Edmonton, Alberta) and have just recently purchased 2 1983 CBX550F bikes. One is complete and running but needs the cam chain tensioners replaced. The second is apart and in many boxes many boxes not the way I like to buy things.

The questions I have are:

1- Is there an upgrade for the head steady ball bearings and if so does anyone have the part Number?

2- I would like to return the bike exhaust to 4 into 2 Since only one side is available from Honda. Is there any reasonable pipes available 4 into 2? Will any other pipes eg: Nighthawk pipes of the same vintage work I like chrome ?

3- On both bikes the rear grab rail is missing not a major thing but would like to replace them any around?

4- Has anytone replaced the front triple tree and forks with anything better (interceptor or Hurricane Front end)just an idea?

5- Has anyone had any experience rebuilding the mono shock or finding a upgrade for it?

hi jo
as an f2 owner, the question has to be asked....why?
if you are still determined to turn it into a standard f model who are we to stop you!
dont want to sound like i am trying to teach grandma to suck eggs but.......
have you tried the local/national breakers, take a look in MCN bikemart.
and also try M&P, as they do a range of headlights and brackets that should fit.
i have to ask has anyone else done this? and what did you do with the electrics/cables that are stuffed into those two plastic boxes in the fairing?
i suppose that there must be a way of getting round this.

And while im on, can anyone out there let me know what top end speed you are getting, no bs please,on recent trips onto m/ways, ets it seems that i am pushing my luck to get much over 90ish, think the carbs are out, but would be interested to hear your thoughts.
am i just remembering the bike through a rose tinted visor or have i got problems? I seem to remember a trip to italy on my original f2, and cruising at 90-100ish.
let me know!

rob

Hi there,

I've bought a CBX550F and am in the process of rebuilding it. I don't want the fairing on the bike but without it the headlight sticks out about a mile!

Does anyone know where I can get a headlight shell and headlight that will fit this bike - I know it can be done because I've seen loads with this type of set up.

Help, the bike's nearly finished and I can't wait to get out on it!

Thanks,

Jo

p.s. I'm in the UK (Brighton)

I have a 550 for which I am waiting anxiously for the tank to be repaired so I can ride it again.

I also own a business called Foran Motorcycle Exhausts, see dropbears.com for link to web page, and am interested to see if anybody is interested in a replica type exhaust system for the 550. I already make a replica system for the CBX 6 Owners Club of Australia.

The system would be made of T304 stainless with headers in 38 mm stainless tube. Cost would around $1500 Australian.

If anybody is interested please contact me

15 v sounds good to me , haynes quote 14 v at 5000 rpm. If the system were over charging your battery would get warm and lose electrolite through evaporation.
