I own a CBX 550 F2. Hopefully it will soon back on the road with a rusty tank repaired and a respray.

hello again
having a few problems with starting
if the bike starts straight away its fine but if it doesnt the battery seams to go flat the solinoid clicks and clatters then the engine turns over slowly then gets faster then the solinoid clatters again the battery is fully charged and its only a few months old
ive changed the solinoid and starter motor does anyone have any ideas

Hi George,

As far as parts go I'm not quite sure what I'll need. The fairing has a few cracks in it I might be able to repair, but I will need a R/H/S side panel. On the mechanical side I'm finding out as I go. When I got the frame back from the powder coaters and started to build it I made new bushes for everywhere as I went. The rolling chassis is now complete with stainless fasteners etc. At present I'm rebuilding the carbs which are ok and will get some bits chrome or nickel plated. I have the engine totaly stripped for bead blasting and painting. I'll need a cam chain (surprise), big end shells, hopefully get away without a rebore but will need new rings. Awaiting a new clutch and new cams. The No.3 big end journal that is getting close to the tolerance limit I will probably get metal sprayed and reground to original spec. All the engine casings are fine and once blasted will paint or polish quite well. Other small bits are handlebar grips, throttle tube, indicators and I would really like new clock casings.

I've been taking pictures as I'm going and have just started to look at the bike again after a few months break. I bought the bike last August as a project, hoping to have it on the road this year, but looks like it will be next year now.

If anybody from the UK is building a bike and is looking for new bushes etc. I might be able to help out. Probably best to e-mail me.

like the "do it right......" only wish that some people would learn that. I live in hope.

The a problem with the crank and bearings happen to a friend of mine , because he used gallons of instant gasket to seal everything which worked its way down and into the oil pump and resulted in a costly second rebuild. So if you are going to bulid it yourself" do it right,do it once and walk away".As for the graphic`s a local firm is going to reproduce the to my design

As an ex-despatch rider i know plenty about bodging espec on CX500`S......(as for micra`s i would not fit in one lol).
Spent many a weekend stripping an rebuilding the plastic maggot.....

thanks for that Gary, will take a look at them just in case, and as luck would have it i still have my donor bike just in case.
Dave i think you will find that bodging is an english tradition, it has spread to other parts of the world especially during the era of collonial rule, one only has to look at the car/bike mechanics of india to prove this.
bodging was also exported to the Americas and africa during the 17th and 18th century by english explorers and colonists, the tradition still exists in these countries even after the demise of the empire, again i draw your attention to that most american of bodges the Harley Davidson.
Mainland Europe was the next area to be bodged into submision. Especialy after the end of WW2 the allies forced many europeans into this black art. Proof:- Eastern europe with their trabants/MZs/nevals/Ladas. Proof:- Italy, moto guzzis (I know i have one) the engine from a mini tractor in a bike frame! need i go on!
So where does this leave japan? it was rare for westerners to visit before the 20th century so they never suffered the problem, for this reason they build some of the finest motorcycles and cars ever produced,one only has to look at the nissan micra or the cx500 to see this.

Rob,does the wheel move very slighty when the brake is fully applied? If so then its the spacers that disc actually sits on inside of the wheel covering, if so then just replace them with new ones this then stops the problem.I had the same problem with the rear disc clunking when i was braking, i just replaced them on my roadworthy bike and the problem disappeared.The only problem you will have is that they are 3.50 each an you will need 3 each side,you will be able to order them from any honda dealer or decent bike shop.

Hi Dave

The right hand side has a noticable 'clunk' when breaking or comming off the main stand. Will have to take a look this weekend to see if this can be cured. the left hand side does have some movement but not as bad.
I feel some bodging comming on......

like you say the right hand cover and caliper is held in place by the large bolt and there should be no noticeable play in this side, the left hand side is connected to the antidive by a short linkage, this allows a slight movement as the backplate rotates and blocks off some damper oil ports , as you roll the bike forwards it's normal to make a slight knocking sound.hope this helps .

Hi everyone!

I have bought a CBX400F -82 as my first motorcycle. I am still training to get my motorcycle drivers licence, so I haven't done any real travelling yet. But so far i'm really enjoying the motorcycle.

It has been carefullt restored and cleaned by the previous owner, he has put down about 300 hours of work on it.

I hope this forum will be able to answer any upcoming questions that i might have in the future.

13 Owners!!! lucky number? and i bet most of the past owners did't treat it as well as you.

sorry but i just have to ask this question again. does anyone notice any play on the front brake plate (the bit with the air scoops that the calipers are mounted to)
when braking there seems to be some clanking from these.
when the bike is on main stand you can rock them backwards and forwards. the right-hand side is held in position by one large bolt and the left is held in place by that anti-dive link arm. dont know if i should be putting some shims in to stop the movement or not!
your recommendations please.
