Mileage on the bike I have is 44 000 with 13 owners since birth in 1982. The No.3 journal is still within it's tolerance, just, but the others are near perfect. Going by the condition of everything and the engine bolts the bike has never been apart or dropped. Still on standard bores and surprisingly they measure up ok. Not really got much cash at the moment but just trying to do a bit at a time. Working in a machine shop helps with replacing bushes and stuff, and that stupid adjuster on the so called anti-dive mechanism!!

hi all
Gary thiat sounds like some rebuild! interested to know what prompted it? was the bike a basket case? might have been cheaper to buy another bike, but think of the satisfaction you will get when its done! cant agree more with you about regular oil/filter change. how many miles has the bike done? same qestion to you Colin. cant say that i have heard about the main bearing problem before, any symptoms of this anyone?

Yeah colin the main bearings are weak on cbx`s i`ve had to replace my crankshaft and all the shells.Still its given me chance to replace the frame, electrics, shock, linkage, steering head bearings, timing chain its cover as well and last but not least the cam chain and tensioner.(Would of been cheaper to have bought a new bike.....)
Still if you do the job proper when re-building and stick to good quality oil an filters and regular changes you should see some decent life out the engine....

George,

Thanks for the advice. I bought the bike as a rolling chassis and the rest in bits. The main fuse unit has been replaced. The engine is stripped ready for bead blasting so I am going to replace the cam chain. When measuring the big ends I noticed that there was greater wear on No.3. Do you know if this is common?

I wasn't sure about painting because of the decal situation. I've managed to get a brand new tail unit and will keep hunting for the rest of the plastics. I sent Sunrise an email asking about the decals but as yet there has not been a reply.

Colin.

I have nearly finished rebuilting my CBX550F2 after a minor crash. It has been total resprayed red.The only major problems I found was 1.oil leak from the right side chrome casing, fixed with some liquid metal weld. 2.main fuse loacted under the seat was loose and the wires at either end had melted the plastic coating to say the least. If you need any advice leave a message

Happy rebuilding

George, and anybody that is interested.

I contacted Sunrise about 10 months ago about graphics. I had an original stripe for the tail piece which I sent them and they had a F2 donor bike which they were going to trace the graphics from. I've never heard anything since speaking to them in March.

I'm rebuilding a F2 and don't know much about about them. Can anybody tell me things to look out for.

Colin.

I'm not too sure what the cam change tensioner problem is although this winter I'm doing a complete rebuild on my own. However I have done work on seventies sohc models and their problems were twofold , sometimes the tensioner blade would break although I've never heard of a cbx doing this, but more commonly the tensioner spring wasn't up to the job, A quick fix on them was to "help" the tensioner by hand, has any body tried this on a cbx ? if you look in the workshop man. it shows you how to insert a piece of wire to release the tensioner, if you pushed the wire the opposite way it would tension the cam chain, just a thought.

Hi all

I am considering a CBX550F11 which has the usual camchain problem. I have noted the other postings about this and no-one has come up with a cure for it.

As a novice with this bike with NO experirnce on Hondas, I am wondering about the possibility of fitting a needle roller bearing on the adjuster pivot. This would not require as much oil as a plain bearing to maintain the lubrication.

1) has anyone tried this
2) has anyone got the mearurements required, pivot pin diameter, adjuster bush outer diameter and the thichness of the adjuster. This would allow the sourcing of the correct size bearing.

Hope to get the bike, but it will be another couple of weeks before I can due to family commitments. Will keep you posted on the progress.

If anyone it interested, I have a Triumph T150 1972, in the prossess of a major stripdown, ie the bike now in as many parts as it was before being built by Triumph. You can see it at the above web site.

Keep riding

Stan

i wouldnt pump air into the front forks bcos it makes the front end bouncy and it causes problems on corners
i think it should be between 8 and 10 psi front and about 12 back not too sure tho

I have recently bought a fairly clean 1985 CBX550FD. Everything appears to be OK with the bike ( after stripping the rear brake and freeing the pistons which were stuck tight in the calipers )other than the characteristic cam chain rattle, which I intend sorting out at some point in time . The only problem I have with it is that when I switch on the headlights, the red warning light beneath the oil light on the left hand side of the cluster of idiot lights, comes on. The warning light has no legend on it, and I assume it to be the generator charge warning light, however the charging circuit seems OK as the battery is working fine. Could anyone enlighten me as to why this light should illuminate ?? Also, can anyone give me some indication of the air pressure settings for the suspension system as I have yet to locate a Haynes manual!

Thanks ...... Mick

I haven`t seen dunstall pipes for years john,i do know that a standard motad replacement exhaust costs around the 200 quid mark though as i looked into buying one a few weeks back from m and p.Try checking the used bike guide in the parts section or your local loot or bargain pages, best of luck john..

hi john (again)
Just had to add this after i re-read your post.
you may have topped up the oil weeks ago!!!!, but have you checked it? remember these are old girls now, and need a bit of TLC. Check it EVERY TIME you go out on it.
Oil is cheap, big ends are expensive!

Have fun

hi john
I have seen this before on other bikes under heavy front breaking. If the light stays off on normal runs I would not be too bothered. have even seen it happen in a car under heavy breaking.
Just make sure the oil level is ok and you change it regularly and should be ok.

Rob

P.S. Saw a mint CX500 turbo today, remember those!
It looked like it had just come out of the showroom!
