the motors down to the cases now ( excuse my slowness but I'm inspecting each part as I dissemble)the cams arent too bad but the bearing surfaces show signs of oil starvation (scoring) I'm not concerned about this as I've had hondas in the past with this and they dont get worse ,checking the oil feed to the head it has to pass through a one m.m. hole in the banjo bolt under the oil pressur switch , I'm almost tempted to open this out but it may starve the oil to the crank so Ill leave it for now (has anyboby tried this ?)

Alien autopsy part one
took my first gander into the engine yesterday , quite few things became apparent, the cam chain tensioner is at it's maximum travel but there's still slack in the chain , either the chains shot or .... maybe something else as I continue , the exhaust cam appears to be one tooth retarded , and on stripping the clutch there is play in the drive shaft ( probably bearing failure), by the way although I'm an engineer I'm not a motor cycle engineer so any comments are welcome.

' morning

Just wondering, is there any place in the world where bikes are more expensive than in Denmark?

My 84 CBX550 65Tkm cost me 1281USD plus 2157USD tax = 3418USD. (Well, it would have if I could afford the tax - out here where I live plods are few and far between). This is a normal price, the bike is in good shape. Can anyone beat that? The worst thing is that I could buy the same back just across the border in Germany for about 1200USD, on the road (except I couldn岐 ride it in Denmark)...

So next time you see a Danish registered CBX550 treat the driver with respect, he (she) is probably a millionaire!

Okay guys...who knows how to scan in pics so i can get em on the the site?
Too right about that CBX rob it does look a cracker,it looks like he`s using CBR wheels and i like the idea of those twin shocks.Looks like it will handle well...
Never been knocked off by a volvo driver, had a bad run in with an opel manta driver once though,he turned right into the road junction i was stationary at nearly lost me leg that day.His car ended up on top of my leg and bike...OUCH..
Dunno about stella rob but morrisons are doing a good deal on carlsberg export buy three packs of eight bottles for six quid LOVELY..............

I am glad to say that i have a "bike fund" account for just this sort of thing. trouble is she "borrowed" a couple of hundred from me recently cos we went into the red on our main account. still aint got it back though!
but i do feel partly to blame for the problem.....price of stella seems to have gone up!!

A pint of oil per tank! that was normal for triumph/bsa (insert any old brit bike name)
a mate with brit bikes calls it the "self draining lubrication system" might have more to do with the fact that he is a plant/hgv fitter! no such word as "delicate" in their vocabulary

look forward to seeing the photos Dave.
by the way, has any one looked at the photos on the front page of this site? take a look at number sixty (60)
belongs to a jap guy called Lego. that has to be the best looking cbx i have ever seen...even with no engine!
if Yasu is reading this, please ask this Mr Lego if he has got the bike up and running yet.

rob

what me! take the piss out of volvo's. never.

I thought you knew " the other half " never knows how much our play things cost! A friend has still got the on bike shots, soon as I get em back I'll get em scanned, I'm sorry the only hairy things in the photos are the mates @rses! I found even though I had the cable release wired to the left hand grip you need 100 % conentration when cornering, there are some pleasant shots of Matlock though.
Dave
ps last stripdown I used homemade gaskets and hylomar sealant , thats why I was using a pint of oil to a tankfull of petrol !
pps my last volvo was a 240 estate and you could get a complete bike in the back .... and thats why I'm only allowed saloons now.

if i ever find a goldwing atractive (apart from in the centre of a large bonfire) i will be visiting the nearest optician.........
have you told the other half how much the gasket set was?
cornflake packets and a tube of liquid gasket would have been my solution!!
would love to see these "on bike" photos somtime, get them posted soon. anything hairy? (if you'll pardon the expression)

rob

PS. fancy owning up to being a volvo driver....you'll never hear the last of it.
got to go now as i have left the 240 estate unlocked and my trilby needs washing......now wheres that pouch of rough shag gone.......Ethel have you seen me pipe......

To all out in cyberland I have a question or two.

1 Does the CBX 400 and the CBX 550 or maybe CBX 750 use the same crank?
2 Is the rod journal size the same for these three?
3 Is the rod pin the same size between the CBX 400 and CBX 550 or even the CBX 750?
4 Do you know were I am going with this?
5 Does anyone have a set of CBX 400 rods for sale?
6 Has anyone tried making a short stroke CBX engine?

I hope to start the stripdown this weekend , let you know what I find , bit the bullet and ordered a full gasket set at the weekend it broke my heart (not to mention wallet!) I bought my first bike for less ! as for gold wings I find them more attractive as the years go by ( but I do drive a Volvo so that may explain a lot )

Good morning....while on the subject of high mileage CBXs I came across the story of an Argentinian Honda Goldwing (a ptretty close relative of the CBX550)which has circumnavigated the globe(twice),logging up an amazing 750.000km! So, hey, save all the CBX寄 from the scrapyard you can - nobody knows how far a CBX can go!

It was with some surprise that I saw a posting from NZ about a CBX550 with 210.000km on the clock, and climbing. Just before I started to shake my head in disbelief I remembered reading about a Volvo P1800 in New York with something like 3,2 MILLION km (original motor). Does anyone have a CBX with original-motor mileage comparable to the above (well, perhaps not 3,2 million)- maybe we should initiate a Mileage World Championship based on continents...any offers?

It's always a dilemna deciding how far to go when replacing servicable parts on old bikes if youre not careful the parts cost more than the bikes worth, if you follow the manufacturer guidelines you'd need a bottomless wallet !take for example the cam chain I believe you can use a " soft link " to replace the chain without stripping the motor but you have to remove the chain from the engine and measure it around the cam sprockets to see if is out of spec. !( if you can bear with me I'll be giving an account of my engines stripdown over the winter )in particular the cam chain and tensioner my idea being modifying before replaceing , as i said before SOHC hondas can have their tentioners " helped ". As regards fork gaiters , I fitted some modified moto cross items , but I found they held a lot of condensation during the winter months so I removed them.

Hi chaps.
I finally sorted out a new exhaust.
A 渡ewMotad 4-1, bought for 80 quid.
After fitting the pipe, the cam chain was rattling horribly, and then some, but mostly disappeared after I balanced the carbs. Now all I get is a fast 'Ti ti ti tirattle between 2000 3500 revs, that starts as the oil gets warm, but does not sound terminal, just very annoying.
It is also there, when warm, at tickover.
Above 4000 revs, she is quite and velvety smooth.
It is the cam chain that this causing this and I am after some advise here please.
Do I need to replace the cam chain, and if so, do I have to split the crank, (please no), or can I use a split link, or can I get away with just replacing the tensioners. The mileage is 36,000 and any previous service history is unknown.
I have new front fork, anti-dive, and other seals on order, and will be fitting these before the MOT at Christmas, and will hopefully find the creaking, but I am still looking for some fork gaiters. Does anybody know where to get some please?
Am I impressed with the CBX ? You bet your ass, and thanks to this message board, a lot of my questions have already been answered.
Thanks
Basmaf

Well I finally got round to taking the motor out today and discovered two things straight away , firstly when I last refitted the carbs I somehow managed to tuck in the inlet stub on number two pot (I thought it was tight going on !)that explains the weak running and secondly the final drive chain is completely jiggered, which surprised me because since I fitted it a couple of years ago its required very little adjustment , good job santas bringing me a scottoiler ! hopefully the next chain will last a bit longer.I'll keep you all informed regards progress.
ttfn Dave
ps I forgot to mention on my last run out on the cbx I fitted a thirty five m.m. camera to the fairing to "capture the day" ( I know i'm a sad git ) I'll make an effort to scan them in this week and post them.

i was thinking more along the lines of the avon tyre being the problem, but then again i have stamped down on the rear brake in the dry and its locked up the rear.
like i said Dave, they dont feel confident in the wet.
even when its dry they seem to need a few miles on them to make them feel grippy.
i know what you mean about how far you go with the strip down. mine likes the odd pint of oil now and again, but as i use it so little, i wont worry about pulling it to bits to cure it. luckily mine has no rattle, YET!!!!

Barry, not sure what your after? do you mean the paint itself or do you mean the coulour scheme. to make it look like a CB1100R?

I'm surprised more people haven't commented on the rear brake, after all the disc is the same size as the front and the 400 only has one !.When I first rode the cbx I thought it was down to my size elevens! so when I fitted rear sets I took the opertunity to reduce their effectiveness through a linkage, now you have to really stand on the pedal to lock the rear. As regards the stripdown the problem to me is how far to go , when the bikes only worth 00 on a good day,the gasket set itself will amount to 10 % of that .As I said before theres nowt wrong with the bikes performance it just rattles and uses oil like an old kawa triple !so if I can do something about that I'll be happy.

hi all
thats a good site Dave, i can see myself spending a few hours on it. cant remember seeing anything on here about the rear suspension though. will have to look into it.
that trip round the peak district was a while ago if i remember. keep us all up to date on the strip down Dave.

talk about jumping in at the deep end...... my 5 year old car decided not to start on sunday night so a twenty year old bike has been pressed into service for a few days...god its cold out there the past couple of days with all this fog. im sure when i was younger the cold winter evenings were never this cold!!
ah well at least the cbx is getting a bit of an airing and i am starting to get used to it again!!!!!
One thing that i am still worried about, the tyres. the Avons still dont feel confident, especialy round greasy roundabouts and i do find the back wheel locking up on wet surfaces when braking sometimes.

hey Gary, never a muppet, just over-worked and under-paid like us all. i can just hear the customer now.... "my old telly had a better picture than that" or "do i have to have all those wires to those surround speakers"

you may well have guessed that i have been there.
got the tee-shirt.
done that.......once too often!!!

tonight i will mostly be drinking white wine.....

I read it at UMG http://www.buyingbikes.co.uk/tests/test1700.html
the reason I asked because I'm sure I read on the message board something similar many moons ago. I've decided to take the cbx motor out this week for a complete stripdown( whether it's cold or not)I must be getting old I've not ridden her for a month, since I went round the peak district with a couple of friends.

When i say i work for COMET what i really mean is i`m one of the muppets they give a 7.5 ton lorry too and then load it up to back taillift with 45 plus items a day and expect you to fit 15 tellys and washers a day as well as dropping off the other goods as well as collecting stuff from the stores.......considering that a pro-logic telly install usally take an hour to do right thats if they have good tele signal and a washer ussually takes on average 20 mins to do...needless to say i`ll be glad when chrimbo is over an i can get back to the bike but for now i`m too knackered to do anything except sit down an drink a well earned beer...MMMMMMMM BBBBBEEEEERRRRR..........

hi gary
I thought you would have guessed? i am one of those lost souls who sells hi-fi equipment. hence the first question anyone asks when they find out, is.. "any chance...etc,etc"
my response these days is to ask if they have a minimum of a few thousand pounds (at least!) to spend.
that usually shut them up for five minutes, after which the next question "but how much discount can i get?"
i now respond by telling them that i will add ten percent to the price for taking up my valuable time.
Anyhow back to the topic.......
hows your rebuild going, how much have you got to do?
and remember NO temper tantrums! they usualy end up costing you more money. always walk away from it,you can come back later. i did that about seven years ago with my guzzi, still cant face it!!
let me know how your getting on.

Dave, that sounds interesting, where did you read this, classic mechanics? would love to know. i did leave a message a while ago asking if anyone had ever replaced the original rear shock with an aftermarket type, got no response so i assume that we are all on the original ones still.

Rich, sounds like you have the usual cam chain rattle, go back and read some of the earlier posts for advice.

sorry Umberto my italians not that good these days, but it looks like your after a headlight housing, because you have taken the fairing off. try some local motorcycle salvage/breakers. i know you want an original item, but why not find another similar unit complete.

im off for a beer!!

Guys
just reading about hondas vf 500 and it says you can breath new life into the rear shock by removing the schraeder valve and pumping out the old oil and replacing it with 30 grade . Has anyone tried this on their cbx ?
