Has any one replace the rear air shock with anything else?
I found that an 86 VFR shock is a direct bolt in but the spring rate is much too stiff (shock body eye to eye length is 270 mm).
Anyone know what spring rate would be appropriate?
Thanks

If only i had the money and the space.....
I would have even considered going halves with someone, but cant even afford that at the moment. bummer.
funny that, i thought it was you on ebay. was one of the other guys here though, cos he remembered me when i mailed.
anyone out there a member of the vjmc? that might be worth trying Gary.
hi Basmaf. i know the problem with space mate..
Shed. Assorted le mans bits, old cooker, parts for new kitchen. plus all the normal garden shed things.
Spare room. more assorted le mans bits, mainly engine and gearbox related. ie. all of it!! Computer and desk, assorted cabinets with her work stuff, lots of my radio and electronics crap. add to this the fact that the room is still without carpet because i am still trying to finish some rewiring. A bomb site would look tidy in comparison.
Garage. Spare cbx, mangled Z750, most of a Z650, craploads of other stuff that should have been thrown away years ago.
Oh and some bsa A10 bits.
by the way if you dont want that 18 year old, i am sure that i could squeeze her in somwhere, or should that be, i could squeeze somthing into an 18 year old....
time to go

You are right, but the problem is, I really do have nowhere to put them.
I already have 5 bikes, with 2 running, 3 in bits, and 1 of those is at a mate's house.
But if I did buy them, her indoors might divorce me, leaving lots of room for all those extra bikes and I could see that horny 18-year......, but I digress
God, but it is tempting, but then her indoors she might decide that 20 years for murder might just be worth it, and she has a fearsome temper
Combine the temperament of Maureen O'Hara from The Quiet Man with that of a great white shark, add a few doses of PMT, then put her in a really bad mood .....
Yeah, she would take the 20 years, shit$@)e(J
But, I am very interested in the spare motor..
The CBX service was going back nicely.
Rocker cover off, cams out, chain tensioner off.
I cut the rubber sleeve off the tensioner spring, and fitted a new tensioner blade.
I checked the valve clearances, and installed new plugs.
The carbs were next, and I had to make some changes, and they are now on the block inlet stubs, but not yet connected to the airbox.
That bit is proving a bugger.
I started her up, and she sounded nice and sweet.
Clutch next
The old clutch plates looked fine, but I swapped them, then
A lug snapped off the Clutch Release Plate, and by the looks of it, has been cracked for a while.
I am phoning David Silver in the morning to get a new one.
I will write it all up for the website.
Happy New Year guys.
Cheers

how big is that lawnmower!!!!
did you have this on ebay a while back? Did i mail you about the pipes? i think i did.
Basmaf....
No chance of persuading her to let you rebuild it with the excuse that it would be worth three times as much when its done?
Basmaf....you want it....
And then making the old man buy a shed, to park his sit on mower in...
Basmaf....you want it now....
And maybe you could talk the wife/girlfreind into waiting till spring/summer before decorating, cos its the wrong time of year to do that sort of thing.
Basmaf....two spare bikes, just what you want....
Anyhow, best of luck Gary. and keep us up to date with whats going on wont you.
I keep thinking that we know somone who might be able to give them a good home. someone who has a few bikes already, someone who may need some spares. but i just cant think of his name..Albert,Alf...Brian,Basil,Barry..no i just cant remember
rob
p.s. i have said it before and i will say it again...
i would have got rid of the girl before the bike

Right unfortunatley its come down to this but needs must when your settling down with your missus.
2 cbx 550`s for sale.1 is the donor bike for the rebuild that is 70% complete new tyres, chain an sprockets powder coated frame, brand spanking new shock absorber and refurbished brakes i.e.pads and pipes. The donor bike is in a state of stripdown but the engine is still in the frame, there is also a spare engine with a brand new crank installed as i was gonna use the donor bike engine till i had completed the rebuild on the old engine.Basically if anyone is interested you will have 2 of everything as i do not have the time to finish this project i.e. new flat an missus wants it decorating!!waaahh. The price i belive is a steal at 700 quid for both bikes please don`t ask me to separate em as i need to get em gone out of my old mans garage he has a strange idea of wanting to put his lawn mower back in there? You will need a tranny van or large trailer to shift everything so come lads an lasses please let thes pair cbx`s got to some people who will put em to good use...Please use my e-mail address to contact me grybertie@aol.com

HI Chaps.
It is that time of year again. No, not that time, but service time.
This year there is quite a lot to do.
Firstly, dump the oil, and replace the clutch plates.
Then it is on to the engine head, and replacing the cam chain guide and slipper blades, then also checking the tappets, and plugs.
If I find a lot of wear on the cam blades, I will drop the sump, and clean the strainer
Then it is on to the fuel in bits.
I will be cleaning the air filter checking the diaphragms for splits, freeing up the throttle stop screw to drop the tick over down a bit, and checking the pilot screws are at 2 turns out.
And that is it.
Sounds very easy if you say it quick, but you know how it goes..
My question is, are there any things that you lot know, that I should know, before I start the job.
I am open to advice.
To give something back to the group.
I have heard that a CBX 750 starter motor will fit the CBX 550, but I am not sure what model. (750 of course)????
I also have coming the service info for the CBX printed by Mechanics December 1983, but it won't arrive till after I have done my service.
I will post it on my website after I have got it scanned.
Thanks
-Basmaf

Dave,
Thanks so much! One more question if I may: My "matriculation" date on my ownership papers says 1984. I've seen fotos of "my" bike that date in 1985. At the same time Rear Master Cylinder parts or kits seem to refer to models 79-80 or 81-82. Would the 81-82 be fit for my bike? Maybe it is an '82 that came to Italy later? Everyone seems to call it an '85. Above is a site with a foto of the same model I have.
Thanks again,
Robby

The english for that is master cylinder, it may well be the problem but it would be worth bleeding any air out of the system first

Rear brake pedal has non resistance. It goes all the down. This summer the rear brake got stuck and since then it does not work. I wnat to know what to expect before going to a mechanic in Rome where most are not so honest. The guy I went to said I need a new "brake pump" I don't know the term in english.
HEEEELLLLLPPPPPP!
Thanks,

To get rid of the levers initial free play, fit a washer between the lever and master cylinder plunger ,just watch you don't loose all the play or the brake will not release and bind , older hondas had an adjusting screw in the lever to do this.

Stan my well bee correct, but just try.
After you have bled the brakes, with new fluid, pull the lever back and tie it back overnight.
Now turn the handlebars so that the routing of the brake pipes are as vertical as possible, then leave overnight.
Any air that is free will flow upwards to the handle bar piston.
Leaving the bike on the side stand may help.
In the morning tap the pipes all the way from the discs up.
I use a small spanner.
This will help to dislodge any trapped air in the system, and force it up.
Gently release the lever as you are tapping the pipe work near the top, and hold it where you are just starting to move the piston, and have taken up the free play.
This opens the valve and gives a direct route for the air to escape.
Then gently tap the end of the pipe work and gently pump the leaver, to help dislodge any trapped air at the top.
Always ensure that the trapped air has the most vertical route possible.
Repeat the above procedure as required.
It does work, and although it may take a couple of attempts, and I do all my bikes this way.
My hoses are original, but the lever is really solid.
Good luck.

Barry,
sounds like you have done almost everything you can.
If the brake hoses are the original stock rubber brake hoses they are probably getting too soft and expanding under pressure.
You may need to get new brake hoses. The best is to replace them with steel braided ones.
good luck.

If anyone wants some good parts for their CBX550, I am going to break mine.
It's in good general nick but I'm fed up trying to get it to run well. Endless fuel problems.
Email me if you're interested in the starter etc. It's also got pretty much brand new chain and sprockets.
I'm in Kent UK. Nothing expensive, if you're an enthusiast.
Just want to get my money back.

Hey Barry

has them for 159 quid. Sure yours is broke? I fixed mine a while back (this year) quite easily with a bit of epoxy and some bodging...see earlier postings.
