.....errrr...no. But no doubt Harry wil find some web site that says you can modify a grease gun/foot pump to do it...
Just take off the top caps. Undo the bottom drain bolts to drain old oil. refit same. then fill with the quantities i mentioned.

I have never calculated how much oil the cbx uses, but if i top it up to the upper limit at the start of the week and use it every day, i guarantee that it will be down to the lower limit by the end of the week.
because its not my main transport i am not too bothered if it stays at this kind of consumption.

Rob.
Mine uses a bit of oil as well, and I had to top her up for the first time this weekend, but I was supprised at how little she needed.
After running a Honda 250G5, the oil level is somthing I check weekly.
I suspect that my rings were a bit gummed, and now that they are more free.
it is probably due to changing the oil more than once every 5 years, and not the fact that she is over 20 years old....
As if....
Good luck

Hi Basmaf
The bike has always run a bit rich. fouled plugs on the odd occasion will vouch for it.
But i suspect that i may have some bore wear as well, i need to top the oil up every few days if i have been using it. I will get round to doing a compression test soon.
But as we have said in the past, if it aint broke.....
Never thought about Redex, i will have to give it a go as well.
And as for optimax.....lets not even go there....

I have not touched the pilot mixtures at all.
Do you have a problem ????
The only things I did were, I balanced the carbs myself, and this made the tickover far to low, so I raised it to about 1400 revs.
this is a bit high, but I can live with this, and the adjusting know is really stiff, and then some.
I had to use adjustable pliers on it last time.
I also think The slides are a bit gummy, as when I crack the throttle open, she surges, then just bogs down a bit, and she feels like she is holding back.
I will try redx in the petrol, Optimax, to start with and see it that clears things out a bit.
My RS runs a lot better on Optimax, but that is injected, and it is 5p a litre more expensive.
Ouch.
Good luck with the key.

hi all
Diane, the red line on a cbx550 is ten thousand five hundred rpm. Not sure where the six rpm came from. did the previous owner have any engine work done, and did he recommend you to not go above six thousand rpm for a few hundred miles?
A hundred and ten kph is about seventy mph. cant remember what that would be in rpm but i would guess at about half way on the counter. the bike will do this and some all day.
Not sure where you are so its a bit hard to say about the value. In the UK, a good example can still be a fairly cheap buy. In north america they do seem a bit more rare, and it seems like they have a bit of a cult following in the far east.
Not a bad exchange though, a moped for a cbx. wish i could do deals like that. Has this guy still got any bikes, cos i have a few heaps in the garage that i would swop.
Basmaf. did you make any adjustments to the pilot mixture when you serviced. and if so, did you just set them to the recommended settings?
My poor old thing has now been sat in the car park at work for almost a week. I sent the ignition switch off this week to have a key made. and yes, i now know the moral of the story. Make sue you have a f***ing spare key!!!

HI:
I just purchased this bike several months ago and just getting into biking.
I was wondering how fast these bikes can go and what rpm you should be getting at 110k per hour.I was tolded by the previous owner that you should not let your bike get to 6 rpm? Is this true?
I have several offers on this bike? Why? Is it a rear bike ? What price value would or could you get for this? I traded this bike with a moepad so I never had to exchange cash.
We love to hear from someone on this
Thanks and I'm enjoying this site

So you guys don't think that you are bound to Honda for clutch plates, an early CBR600 is the same. Therefore aftermarket friction plates are available.
Barnett Plates.
22201-KY2-000 for Qty 5 - the Barnett number HPK-60A
22201-MA7-000 for Qty 1 - the Barnett number HPK-66A
I haven't found cross over springs yet.

Part 2
Running rich.
When I first heard her running, the tick over was very lumpy.
I could not hear the head, or cam chain.
When we went back the next day, the tick over was better, but we could now smell unburnt petrol. AKA she was running richer, and I suspect that the dealer had set this to help mask that the engine was in need of a full service.
If you richen the mixture, it can quickly help smooth out a lumpy tick over.
When I got her home, she was serviced, by me, and the petrol smell disappeared, and I suspect that was all that was required.
When the holes started to 殿ppearin the pipe, she started to smell again, but that was instantly cured when it was replaced.
The mixtures are now spot on, and the only thing left to do to the engine is fit the new cam chain tensioner blade, and set the tappets, as 1 is just slightly loose, cos I can hear it when the lump is cold.
thanks

This may be a bit long.
Part 1
The rubber is going great, but I have not as many miles on them as I want, as yet, but I am working on that YEEEEEEEE HHHHHHHHAAAAAWWWWWWWWW
My ignition switch does not have a number stamped on it, neither does the seat lock.
Sorry, but u will need either a key number, or you will need to replace both items.
Is it in listed your manual?, then get your frame and engine number and call your local Honda dealer. They my have access to some records
Else try M&P, MPS, Infinity, or Dave Silver.
Good luck
Clutch.
As soon as I pull the clutch in, she starts slipping, and I mean, as soon as I start pulling the lever.
It is not as bad as slipping under load yet, but that is not very far away.
She has a new, and very well lubed cable, so it is not that.
I am waiting for the NEC show, (and hoping that the plates will last), and will get some there.
Dave Silver, have them for UK pounds 37.52, for friction plates and springs, and may have the free postage deal on again.
Cheers

Hi all
Good to hear about the tyres Basmaf. Sounds like you have done a few miles and scrubbed them in already.
You also mentioned new clutch plates? If its not a stupid question, whats the symptoms/problem?
Another thing. On your home page you mention the bike was running rich. did a replacement exhaust solve the problem?
Dave. I wish.....getting paid to take bikes to bits and put them together again. And you dont even have to prove that it actually works once you have done it.....
rob
P.S. Went to work on the bike today, came out tonight and i seem to have lost my one and only key!! F***!! B******!!
Had to leave the bike and use the company van.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Has the lock got a number on it? I think there was on the key.....no help now though!!

U r Right.
Me 77 front, and ME 99 rear.
She feels like a new bike.
Everything I have done so far on the whole bike, including brakes and suspension has finally paid off
She runs, stops, starts and handles, now, great.
Only 2 things left to do now, new clutch plates, and new camchain tensioner, (already bought), to do.
All the info, so far, is on my website.
Enjoy, and thanks guys for all your advice, everyone who has contributed.
Cheers

tin of magnolia emulsion and a yard brush...perfect.
or even black hammerite, as the bloke down the road did to his austin princess. and i kid you not he DID use a yard brush!
oh yes, back to tank removal...remove side panels, take care not to break any more lugs off. Lift the seat. you will now see a large nut at the end of the tank. Holds the tank to the frame. Remove it. Now disconnect the fuel gauge sensor wire. This is a two-pin in-line connection block, you should see the lead comming out from under the tank and running along the frame.
Now remove the small rubber pipe that connects from the fuel tap to the carb inlet. Now grab the back of the tank and lift it up, just enough to get your hand under the tank to the rear of the fuel tap, you will find the main fuel line to the carbs. Pull this off.
You can now lift the tank clear by just pulling it off the front rubber mounts.
A ten second job, and even i made it sound complicated.
Basmaf, i cant remember which metz combo i used on my old 550. All i can say is that they WILL be better than the avons. Others. how about pirellis? I have used them on the guzzi, and been ok.

Hi
Rob, Dave
Ok. So the Metzeler seem to be in 1st place.
I will go with them.
But which pairing.
Metzeler ME11 / 77 ?
Any Others
Stan
I had the GT501's on my ER5.
Couldnt fault them, apart from quick wearing.
They also went off very early, with lots of tread still left on them.
If I was planning to sell the CBX, then GT501's.
Thanks

I have used Dunlop K591 on my race CBX for several seasons and quite like them. I use a 100/90 up front and 120/90 at the back and it clears the fenders and stuff nicely.
Dunlop has discontinued the K591 but have replaced them with a GT501 which they claim is better. They are priced better than the Bridgestones and Avons.
Grip in the wet is good enough to keep me infront of club level CBRs running DOT radials. Once warmed up in the dry they offer enough grip to wear out the pegs and collector. If grip is exceed they slid controllably.

Not the Avons!!
i think we have talked about the Metz being the best choice in the past Dave.
I still have Avons on mine and just hate them. And being a skinflint means i wont change them until next spring!
i dont like the way they behave in the wet. a few soiled underpants will vouch for that.
they seem to take a fair few miles before they feel confident in the dry. They then seem to warm up and start behaving like a tyre should.
Dont know about the Bridgstones, but would be nice to hear from someone who has tried them on a cbx.Last time i had Bridgestones, was the plastic ones they used to fit to 250 hondas.....say no more.

My cbx was fitted with metzelers when I first bought her and I couldn't fault them wet or dry and the wear rate was very good , when they needed replaceing, due to a bout of poverty I fitted some maxxis , boy were they scary in the wet !never again, I've got the BT 45'S on my VFR and again I can't fault them, I know some others rate the avons but personally I'd put them with the maxxis only dearer !

Hi chaps
I finally got round to replacing the head bearings.
Thanks for the advice chaps.
WhayhayShe now goes round in smooth circles, and does not do threepennybit impressions any more.
I also fitted the dust seals to the brakes.
Fact, when front wheel removing, it is easier to remove the brake pipes from the callipers, and re-bleed, than leave them attached.
It is coming to that time of year again, and my tyres are about shot and so I am looking for more advice.
I need some new rubber hoops, but this time somewhat bigger than the brake dust seals
I ride all year round, but in winter it is usually town work.
I have narrowed it down to
Bridgestone BT45
Avon AM20 / 21 / 18
Metzeler ME11 / 77
Good, bad ?
Any others ?
Comments please.
Thanks

FOR SALE - I have a Red white and blue CBX550 F2 A reg that I would like to sell for spares or repair. I have owned it for many years but sadly, cant afford to keep it on the road and its MOT has run out. I think it would take about 00 to get it MOTable if you are handy with DIY maintenance or would be absolutely excellent for spares. Its in the South West and is kept in the dry. If anyone is interested in seeing it with a view to purchase, please contact me at my email address which is Secretsquirrel_38@hotmail.com
I can scan some photos in if you would like to see it beforehand. Pricewise, Im not sure what to ask as yet, but will sell for the going rate for a bike of its condition and year when I find out what that is!.
Thanks
Nic.

Hi Rob ,
the CBX 550 f without fairing was available only for 1983 in Canada , but you could still get a brand new left over 1983 model for only $ 1600. CDN ( about $ 1200. US at the time ) as late as 1990 at some Honda dealers . A friend of mine made quite a sensation in US in late '80 when he made a trip to New England
with my present bike .
My ex-girlfriend is now in Florida riding a ? ...CBX 550 .
She must be the only one out there with a CBX . The bike made the trip free of charge from Canada with the moving truck and without any problem with the custom .
As for the semi-custom Nighthawk 650 , you're right , it's a different bike than the one on eBay .
Ben
