Araldite doesn't have a problem with heat itself ( in fact it helps it when setting) but ... if youre bonding something that expands with heat ie steel the resin may crack off because it doesn't ! but it does have the advantage of being an insulator . Success will depend on the surface area of the joint ( the bigger the better)and of course being well degreased. As the starter doesn't get that hot , heat isnt really a problem, as for liquid metal I've never used it for that type of repair , mainly broken castings, hope I've not confused you further !

Hey, this starter stuff is fun! At the moment I have got the local electrician to solder in new (modified, probably from a fishing trawler) brushes and fit a new spring. Tthe single cracked brush housing I will repair with araldite (does anyone have any experience with araldite and heat, should I rather use liquid metal - if anyone is reading this, please drop a comment before this evening???) and I picked up a 20x35x7 seal at work, which should fit (original=20x35x5, but i can leave out a few sims).Price=next-to-nothing. If that doesnt work, then I am afraid your bits probably wont work either, Basmaf - but there is a starter on ebay next week for 50 euros. If I dont get that, there is a starter at a Danish breakers for 100pounds. Stay tuned!

Help!
I've burned out an exhaust valve out on my CBX550.
Honda want 1 for one, I can't count on getting one from a salvage yard, they want to sell cylinder heads complete with valves.
Anyone got a secondhand exhaust valve I can have? preferably for free!
I'm based in the UK.

Hi Harry
Cheers for the manual, you need to tell me how much, and who to pay, and hopfully it is good news on the parts front.
If that lot, on the pics are wrecked, then what happened to cause that mess?
Glad the windings are ok,. If they were faulty, that is a starter write off.
I will be checking on my spare asap and will get it back asap.
If you find you need it, let me know.
cheers

Hi Basmaf

The pics I sent are lifted off a German CBX site, and show the starter components I need. Mine are knackered, completely and the whole shebang looks like a real dogs breakfast....I seem to have located a scource for these two parts, as they appear on the picture, from Germany, so I will report back when and if I hear something form them...Otherwise I have cleaned everyting up and tested the coil which seems to be okay, according to the manual which BTW was dispatched 2 days ago...

Harry.
Sorry, but the auto electrician is off sick, and his mate don't know what is happening with it.
He is due back today!!!!!
Looked at pic, but can't see fault.
Brushes look ok.....
How are you doing?

I have been a bit busy. Off topic, but
Service for the RS was buggered up.
Original dealer did not ring me back, 3 times, so has to take RS to other dealer for service.
Big mistake, global proportions, meteorite impact, dinosaur extinction, etc.
EMU wont talk to gameboy and Triumph are not willing to authorise warranty time to find fault even though RS is still under warranty, and dealer damaged bodywork, left cap off header tank, and is denying that they broke things.
Triumph said that they would honour warranty, if I will pay for diagnostic work to find wirring fallt.
Not F*()ing happy at all, and them some.
I spent evening tracing fault to corroded connector in loom.
Well happy I found Fault.
Now to sort out rest of service.
Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of........

I think theres a starter virus on this site ,give the windings a clean by all means but theyre not afected by oil only the brush gear, youll be lucky to find spare carriers and springs as far as I know you can only get brushes , but you never know, didnt basmaf recomend going to an auto restorer ?I got another two years out of mine by undercutting the com and freeing up the springs and new brushes
good luck dave

Help - I need someone to tell me if parts numbers 31206MA6008 (31206MR6008) und 31201KG7000 are the long-cabled brushes and short-cabled brushes fitted on the brush-plates for the dreaded AAAAAARGHH starter. Mine died yesterday AAAAAARGH, its a miracle it ever bloody worked, full of oil (do I just need to clean the coils with electrical cleaner spray or are they unsaveable????)and needs new brushes, brush springs (what numer do THEY have), new brush slides (oh, forget it, a whole brush plate with all the fittings) sim-ring/bearing and I want to order the parts from David Silver but there are no descriptions in his list of spares, just numbers. See, problem is am going for the MOT in two weeks AAAAAAAAAAARGHH, so I need to get my act together chop-chop. So a short list of parts/nos would be muchly appreciated!!!!!

Wow. Great to find others who still have CBX550F's.
My brother has had one for a number of years but it hasn't been ridden or even started in at least 4 years.
I have convinced him to let me have it to see if I can do anything with it.
He lives in Melbourne and I am in Brisbane but I have had a chance to inspect it.(last week)
A 21 yr old bike with only 32000klm on the clock. It's in almost mint condition.
Apparently it has had an ongoing problem with the kill switch in the right hand switch block. I would be keen to hear from anyone else who has had similar problems.
The bike is being transported north next week and my manual for it should rrive tomorrow so I can do some preparation reading.
If there are any things that you good CBX owner/lover think I may find useful please let me know.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Harry

Is that some sort of road tax?? For that kind of money i would expect the roads to be made of gold!!!
I bet this is the reason the scandinavians invented the volvo, if you have to pay that much in tax you want a motor that will last forever!! (sad but true)
And it may also be the reason why the suicide rate is so high in scandinavia!!
Hope you get it sorted Harry.

Gary, what were you thinking? The next thing you know these little sods will sue you for the distress you caused them.
Remember to get the gun re-activated, then the next time it happens you can bury the bodies under the patio. or better still in a flower bed, this would mean that for once in their lives they would be serving a useful role.

http://hjem.get2net.dk/bioscience/CBX/ is updated, anyone like to send a brochure, article etc as a scan or as a copy for uploading? go ahead, make my day...

Basmaf, the dreaded manual is copied (some examples are uploaded!), my overarms are now three inches bigger! Let me have a mailing adress and I will send it off ASAP. If you are not too keen about having your adress on the net send it to me at harry_teicher@yahoo.com

Am in the middle of the registration wars here. the tax office wants about 150% of what I paid for the bike, this value is in their Big Book Of What Things Cost, so it will take all of two seconds for them to look it up but no! 4-5weeks!!!!! Geez, its not as if i get anything in return, no, i give them about 1400 quid for NOTHING and then they have the cheek to tell me that I must wait another four or five weeks before i can ride the bloody thing. tell you what rob, your jolly scandinav bird looks as good as she does because god has taken pity on us scandinavian motorcyclists. ah well, by the time i can afford the taxes i will be too old for the girls!...

For what its worth - have tried a fair bit of cold starting this winter, bout minus 5 to minus 10 or so, and the best way to start under minus temps is to get the starter to swing the pistons for one or two revs with the cut-off switch activated, and then flip off the cut-off (chugga-chugga-VROOM-vroooom). Otherwise, the ignition causes too much of a drain on my cold battery, which then has problems turning over the engine (nnnngchugnnnnngchuggannnnnnnnnnnnnggggggchuggannnnnnnnnnnngchugga-VROOM-vrooooom). So, let the pistons build up momentum before engaging the ignition and your starter motor will thank you for the easier life by giving you longer service. Probably old hat for most of you, but a real revelation for me this chilly morning!

p.s. the paper filter element is in the housing on the front of the motor and there is a mesh screen on the pick up pipe to the pump in the sump.

Hi
Getting my new acquisition back together now. A couple of questions, perhaps someone can help.

1 Where should the horn be fixed? There is a bracket behind the oil cooler but its very difficult to get at.

2 In the left fork leg, above the main spring, I have got a metal collar followed by a small spring and then the fork top cap, in that order. Is this correct?

3 Is there an oil filter to change/clean and where is it?

Much obliged for any info.

Nice one. I laughed out loud at this one.
There are words to describe you though.

I have got my starter re-brushed, and it is working.
As long as the windings are ok, it is possible.
Barry, check out your local back street auto electric garages.
I am having the 2nd motor done as a spare.
Way cheaper than one from a breakers.
Good luck.

Harry
I am not pushing, but how is the manual coming on

Hi Harry

im using DR8ES plugs. Valve clearence and carb sync done recently. Never fancied the idea of playing with the mixture, as i know full well that i would end up mucking it up. Have you or anyone else tried it? Haynes manual does give some indication of the setting.

Rob

calm down back their Basmaf, take another valium and think of somthing relaxing...Imagine you are walking down a country lane, you hear the gentle sound of water close by, a small stream or brook. You cast your gaze to the sky small fluffy clouds dot the blue sky. the swallows wheel about above you, a tractor in the distance. You pass through a quiet village. Your only thought in life? Should i pop into the local for a swift half or continue my gentle stroll?
A local comes out from his thatched cottage and smiles then greets you with a cheery word.....
"Give us push start mate, the starter on me bikes packed up......"

Oh er..nurse pass that nice jacket with the zip up the back...
