PC04 1014774 Is this an earlier bike?
Had a rear flat yesterday thought I had hit some oil or coolant as I took a left turn and slid a bit. Sure enough a flat in the rear. A tire shop was two blocks away. When they tried to put air in it the air instantly leaked out. Tire would'nt hold pressure. HUH!? Turns out some idiot put a tube in an tubeless tire! Remember I just bought the bike.
Anyway, the garage had a guy who worked on his own bikes and he took the rear tire off for me. had to loosen the exhaust and the frame for the peg, rear brake etc... what a bitch to get the rear wheel off! It was worth the $40 they charged me. A patch normally costs $6 including wheel removal. Sweat was pouring off this guy.
There was a 3 inch nail in my tire. I'm glad it happened there and not in the middle of nowhere. Suprisingly the bike rides just a little better. It really does make a difference.
This reminds me to replace the rear portion of the exhaust, the wheels and brakes if I keep her for very long, though I don't want to modify the machine and depreciate the value to a purist that might buy if I decide to sell.

Any Ideas about replacement parts that fit this model to modify?

Check out http://bakkers.gr.jp/~yasuda/CBX/luca/photos.html

This guy's machine looks hot!! Tough as any contemporary naked bike on the market I think. If I keep my bike I want it to look like that.
So long for now,
euge

HI Ulf,

Thanks for your kind reply.

Yes actually I am considering replacing the stock oil cooler with a larger one. Summers in Texas are extremely hot, similar to Austrailian climate (semi arid) and I think perhaps the design is aimed at cooler European weather. Its not such a big thing really except I'm concerned about oil breakdown and the effects on the engine. 40-45 C ambient air temp is pretty warm for such an engine I think. Maybe changing the oil every 1000 miles might work as well but that can get costly after a while. I found an automotive version for about 45$ that might work mechanically and aesthetically.

As for exhaust 4-2 seems to work well. I dont like the look of original mufflers yet they work and havn't cost me anything yet. Slip-ons might cost hundreds of dollars. I've seen alot of 4-1 on the net and have wondered about the performance.

Interestingly enough, I've actually lived in Norway (Stavanger) with my parents during the 1980's. North Sea oil! I also lived outside Aberdeen, Scotland for three years. I really enjoyed my experiences in both those places. One of my goals is to ride through Europe. I remember how so many folk rode motorcycles.

At first I was sceptical of a 550cc since we go for larger engines in the States- yet once I rode my CBX I was hooked, though I still want something larger eventually. I have a V-Twin Suzuki: 800cc's (cruiser) and it really out powers the CBX but vibrates like crazy compared to the smooth acceleration of a inline four. I'm in love.

Any advice is appreciated.
Euge

Hello Eugene.

Nice to hear that you are satisfied with your CBX 550 F. I live in Norway and I have two CBX 550 ( F + FII ). Do you thinking of installing a bigger oil cooler on your bike? I believe you already have a oil cooler installed under your front lamp.

For your info, my CBX 550 FII hade a 4 in to 1 exhaust when I bought it, and I felt that my bike pulled better at low RPM and was quicker in response, after I installed a 4 in to 2 exhaust system. With the 4-1 exh.system, did the engine start pulling from 4thousen rpm and with the 4-2 system it started from 3thousen . If there was any different at top rpm, I do not remember.

Regarding top-end and oil lubrication I do not have any experience, however with my 550 F it followed a damaged used top, due to defect camshaft bearing. Can not remember if it was on cylinder 1 or 4.

Best regards Ulf G.

I was reading all the posts last night. Someone wrote that short trips spelled an early demise for the engine yet long trips was ok. What? Redlining it all the way to work? I think if oil changes come with high frequency (1K-2K) mi and one respects the engine it should last. Of course intown is hard on an engine but some TLC should compensate. BTW I saw a bike onsite with an aftermarket oilcooler on, an ECHO I think. This interests me since keeping the oil temp down helps its longevity. It frequently hits 100F here and that is murder on air cooled engines. Any ideas on where I can get one and does it require extra oil in the crankcase? Which brings to mind flushing the engine. Paraffin build up kills em quick on cars, is there ever been a problem with these inline fours in that regard? I certainly could see damage to the topend if it gets less oil due to gunked up passages in the motor. Are there any seals in the engine that would respond in a poor fashion to a engine flush solvent (one that is used for cars) while the motor runs?
Also I have 4-2 exhaust I'll eventually get modded to contemporary slipons. Is there a brand/model that is best? Will I have to rejet? Cost factor?

I Just bought an 83' cbx550. Runs great- I love it! Cinnamon red and in decent condition. I paid 2200 USD for it from a used dealer. Seems high for a 22yr bike but it is rare here in the US. I bet I have the onl;y one in my city of 1.5 million. Most bikes go for at least 2k unless they are complete junk- even if they are getting up in age. I was a little worried about the size of the motor but I haven't really pushed it yet- seems like it can really move once it hits 5k+. Everyone here in Texas goes for the big bikes like cbr900's or gsx1000's, and of course Harleys. I'll be happy with this for a while. Then an upgrade. I'm thinking a Bandit or a cbr.
Your info has been wonderful, but I haven't read every post.
Has anyone bored out a 550? If so what to? What kind of contemporary forks/rear suspension, mufflers and other essentials work with this model? I'd like to change the wheels and brake system if I keep her for a good long time. How about a stage two or three kit? This bike has potential and I love the way it handles, sound and moves. It just needs some balls at lower RPM. I'll try to post some pics and synopsis at some point.

Don't dispair. Cam chains are still available from distributers of DID chains. DID # 412H-DHA-112L or 144L.
(I cannot remember if the camchain is 112 or 144 links.)
In Canada try Motovan.com

I recently tried to purchase a new cam chain for my 55f, and to my dismay, was told the part is discontinued, and Honda(Canada) has no more left! eek!

Anyone know if it's possible to source one of these somewhere?

Point of interest, the cam chain tensioner is also discontinued, so if you have a 550f you may want to grab one of these if you can, as they are a very common fault.

Hello,

I have a CBX550 front fork mounted on an Honda VT 500 E and I have a small problem. I have to change the oil in the shock absorbers and the oil retainer rings. Can anyone send me some information about them? I need to know the ammount and type of oil that I have to put in them and the dimensions of the oil retainer rings on the shock absorbers. I also have some adjusters on the right shock absorber and I have no idea what they mean. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!
Please send me the answer on my e-mail... Thanks..

I am hearing a "ticking" noise from the right (brake lever) side of the engine but only after the bike has been running for a few minutes. It started after a somewhat spirited run on the highway for 20 minutes in the higher rev ranges...

Stumped with my 1984 with 51000kms...
Thanks...

Has anyone found oversized aftermarket pistons for the 550? It seems piston and rings are getting difficult to obtain from Honda.

Thanks for the post Stan. I realized after I hit the send button that "handling" is subjective. I've ridden some of my dads old Brit bikes, and find they handle really well compared to some much newer Japanese bikes. I guess that was the comparison my brain was hopping to hear, but will not beable to get.

Calen if your look at previous posts:
- Cam chain and tensioner biggest problem. Causes ticking noise top end.
- seized or seizing brake calipers.
- starter.
- Connecting rod bearings. Seams to be only problem on hard ridden bikes.

Other things to look for is the normal stuff especially if it has been sitting for long periods. (stearing head bearings, fork seals, wheel bearings, sprockets, exhaust system, etc.)

When running they handle very well for a design 21 years old.

Good day, I'm looking at a 1983 CBX550F with 19,000 Km on it. This bike has not been started for 7 years. Would anybody happen to have a list of what I should look at, are there any parts that usually go wrong?

Iv'e never riden one of these bikes, how do they handle?

Thanks for any help.

Starter motor failure is usually cause by the failure of the oil seal. Engine oil gets into the brushes and gums them up.
To take the starter apart, clean it up and replace the oil seal is a faily easy job. The seal can be procured at any industrial bearing and seal shop as all seals are standardized.
Replacement brushes again can be found at most industrial
shops. If an exact size is not availble, file a bigger one down to suit.
If the armature or windings are bad, then best find another used started.

Goodluck
