Dave: being less than 25 years the CBX costs nigh on 200 ukps to insure. Mind you, thats the legally required minimum insurance and covers any little old ladies I might run over. Any damage to the CBX would still come out of my own pocket! The CB costs 50 ukp but I can only use it as a hobby machine, for meets and the like, and must document possesion of a daily means of transport (yeah, sure ;-)

Hello

I am the original owner of a 1983 CBX 550F. This is a Canadian model that was never sold with the Honda supplied half-fairing. Nor was the fairing available as an accessory. I am looking for a good used Honda half fairing...or any other half-fairing that is know to work well with the CBX 550F. I am also interested in rear-set foot pegs.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Rob

The CB500 cost less in total (including registration etc) than just the registration of the CBX would cost. Added to that, the cost of insurance for the CB is 1/4 of that of the CBX. So, back in the mists of time, somebody else paid the ridiculous registration on the CB, and I just struck lucky picking up a relative bargain!

Hello all.

I'm looking for an F2 with the fairing in good shape. I have an '83 CBX 550F that looks and runs great, but I would like to fit it with the fairing. I would be willing to import the bike from just about anywhere if I could get what I am looking for. Will consider one for salvage parts only, or one in running condition.

Hi Harry

sorry to hear you will be a less frequent visitor!
Bit of a cheese off with the registration thing, why the problem with the cbx? and won't this happen with the cb500?

But whatever happens ride safe and have fun.

rob

p.s. why not move to "biker friendly" england!! we dont tax you off your bike. we manage to do it in more subtle ways.......

Thanks Dave - will do.

The CB isnt too bad, much less taut and springy than the CBX, more like a garden gate with wheels on. The motor is a bit agricultural, smooth enough but a bit heavy to dance with...nice and smooth though, slick gearchange. It corners well, once committed to the line, but lacks the flickability of the CBX. Have mounted a screen and bags, and the kids like to come out for an evening ride because the whiole setup seems dependable and cosy, in an old-Hondaish sort of way. Hey, even the idiot lights are set in the artificial wood so popular in the 70s! If the motor ever packs in, I could probably find a replacement in an afternoon and bung it straight in.

BTW have a huge pile of litterature, original brochure, copies of manuals (Haynes and Honda) as well as on CD, original owners manual, original parts list etc etc which I will be putting on Ebay at some time...should anyone in the group have CB500 related items (have copies of Honda manual and owners handbook - need Haynes, brochures, articles, vacuum guages, well cared for Mercedes Benz 450SL, etc etc) then I would consider a swap. Oh, and dont move to Denmark if you fall in love with a bike. Sigh...

Gentlemen

My CBX has fallen prey to the frothing teeth of the Danish Registration system, who wanted 14.800kr for the registration of my bike (and thats before road tax, insurance, number plates etc etc.)So yesterday I bought a 1975 CB500 four, licenced et al for 13.000 kr, and the owner took my CBX as a part trade. So, all thats left is to say thanks for all the good tips, ideas etc - cheers chaps!(lights fade, violins play and, in the distance, the throb of a CB500four can faintly be heard......)

what tends to happen with a slack cam chain is its slapping about breaks the tensioner or the guide on the other side ( as was my case),by the way the tensioner is full automatic so if your chains slack its due either wear or the tensioners stuck, unfortunately you can't measure the camchain without a complete stripdown and if you go that far you'd want to fit a new chain anyway,I have heard you can fit a rivetted chain , but I've never done that, all I can suggest is a stripdown to the crankcase , inspect the tensioner and guide and then decide on the fate of the camchain !Im afraid theres no easy/cheap fix ( that I know of anyway )the front brake problem is most likely air in the system my cbx suffered in the same way no matter how I bled them , what did work of a fashion was to tie the brake lever back with a rubber band or something and leave it overnight.
good luck dave

Nice one Gary, you could fix the bike AND take her out for a meal.
Once the bike is done, just take her for a spin down to the local, for a pint, then nip round the chip shop.Hey presto, you get to ride the bike again and she gets the meal.

they dont call me Mr smoothie for nothing........

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows if the righthand cam shaped engine cover that fits over the starter chain assembly on a CBX 550 F1 should contain engine oil? My bike is leaking oil from this cover and I'm hoping that it's just a case of replacing the cover gasket and not something more serious like a crankshaft oil seal!

Hi,

Does anyone know if the righthand cam shaped engine cover over the starter motor chain assembly is supposed to contain engine oil or should it be dry? My CBX 550 F1 has a light oil leak from this cover but I'm hoping it's only the cover gasket and not something more serious like the Crankshaft oil seal!

Regards
Simon

HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa! (Sorry) No, I dont think the starter motor is exchangeable, are you sure yours is a lost cause (I fixed mine by a minor miracle using little more than araldite, a sharp stick, some curses and the local auto electrician, see earlier postings)? Otherwise, there are refurbished starters on ebay.de at the moment (about 160 euros).

Hi Gary.
Bargain price if you ask me, if i had the money...etc,etc..

And sorry to say you have got ME started.....
if i take the bus to work, i can arrive a whole hour before i need to start work!! or twenty minutes later than i should!! and to do all this i can pay the bus company about twenty five quid a week.
if i drive, i pay thirty quid a week in petrol, and that includes me using the car for work AND plesure!!
I blame that fat bastard "two jags Prescot". if the bus was cheaper and more regular i would be the first in line.
But NO i have to waste four spare seats and create more pollution on my own (belive that and you will belive anything....)
If i get my MOT on the bike this week i will use that again if the weather stays OK. At least that will be a lot cheaper. But being a wimpy thirty(almost forty)somthing, i dont want to use it in the rain or snow (its only late march, chances are we will have a foot of snow before the end of april....dont laugh now)

do you want me to go on......

like i said Gary, the british transport system gets me going.....

rob

p.s. I hope the TSB are helpful (that would be a first for a bank) I hope you get the car problems sorted. And i hope the bikes go to a good home. And dont forget to drop in here once in a while to have a laugh at our problems!!

Well rob the asking price is nine hundred pounds for the pair as this is what i believe a fair price for two complete bikes as for hanging on to em well i really would like too but unless the tsb change their mind an let me have a decent loan so i can buy a decent enough car to get to an from work reliably as for public transport don`t even get me started there seven quid a day on bus an tram fairs plus a two mile walk to an from the metro stop to an from work plus the mfirst metro don`t run till six thirty in the morning an takes twenty mins to get to west brom from wolvo leaves just enough time if walk fast enough to clock on without being bollocked for being late and penalised one hours wages if i`m so much as ten mins late...AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH so if anyone wants to buy em complete(sorry won`t split)if you ask me i tell you why,not one too sticth up another biker me.........
